A defective ball bearing runner cannot usually be repaired simply by reinserting loose steel balls; it requires a complete replacement of the drawer runner.

When a drawer sticks, grinds, or can only be moved with massive force, the issue is almost always found within the runner mechanism. A ball bearing runner consists of interlocking metal profiles, between which small steel balls move inside a ball cage. If this cage bends due to overloading or wear, the balls fall out.   2. Warped carcase: If the internal width of the cabinet carcase no longer matches the drawer width precisely, the runner will tilt and jam. A standard ball bearing runner requires an exact installation clearance of 12,7 mm per side.
  3. Mechanical defect: If you find loose steel balls inside the cabinet, the ball cage has broken. Deeply gouged grooves in the metal profile also make replacement unavoidable.

Required Tools and Materials

For the professional replacement of drawer runners, you will need the following tools and installation materials:

  • Cordless screwdriver or manual screwdriver (drive PZ2 or TX15)
  • Folding rule or tape measure
  • Vernier calliper for precise measurement of material thickness and installation clearance

  • Chipboard screws (countersunk head, Ø 3,5 mm or 4 mm, length 15 mm to 17 mm)
  • Replacement runners in the exact nominal length (e.g. 400 mm or 450 mm)

Step-by-Step Guide: Replacing Ball Bearing Runners

Repair by replacement demands precision. A deviation of just a few millimetres during installation will inevitably lead to the drawer sticking again.

Step 1: Remove the Drawer

Pull the drawer out as far as it will go. On the sides of the telescopic runners, you will usually find a small plastic release lever. Push this lever upwards on one side and downwards on the other (the orientation varies by manufacturer). With the levers held down, pull the drawer straight forward out of the carcase.

Step 2: Determine Dimensions for the Replacement

Measure the old runner in its closed state. This measurement corresponds to the nominal length. Common lengths in cabinet making range between 250 mm - 800 mm. For example, if your old runner measures exactly 450 millimetres, you will require drawer runners 450 mm. Measure the height of the runner profile as well (typically 45 mm on standard models).

Take this opportunity to decide on the appropriate extension type:

  • A single extension (partial extension) allows the drawer to be opened to around 75%.
  • A full extension (such as drawer runners full extension) provides 100% access to the entire contents of the drawer.

Step 3: Dismantle the Old Components

Unscrew the chipboard screws from the cabinet profile and the drawer profile. Remove the old metal profiles entirely. Inspect the old screw holes: if they are stripped or worn too large, you will not be able to secure the new runners in the same holes securely. In such cases, fill the old holes with wood filler or use slightly offset alternative mounting holes on the new runner.

Step 4: Installing the Cabinet Runner

The cabinet profile is fixed to the inside face of the cabinet. In professional cabinet making, the System 32 grid is standard. This means: the frontmost fixing hole is located exactly 37 mm from the front edge of the carcase. The distance between subsequent screw holes is a multiple of 32 mm.

  1. Position the cabinet runner and align it so it is perfectly horizontal using a spirit level or an engineer's square.
  2. First, insert screws into the vertical slotted holes of the runner. This allows you to carry out fine height adjustments later (by approx. 1 mm to 2 mm up or down).
  3. Drive home the countersunk screws. Ensure the screw heads sit completely flush within the metal profile, otherwise they will obstruct the moving carriage.

Note on load capacity: For wide drawers or workshop units, consider upgrading directly to heavy duty drawer runners at this stage. These accommodate loads of 45 kg, 90 kg, or more, and require heavier-duty fixings (often Euro screws).

Step 5: Installing the Drawer Profile

The matching profile is mounted flush to the outer side of the drawer box.

  1. Align the runner along the bottom edge of the drawer side (or precisely at the level of the previous fixings).
  2. The front edge of the runner should sit flush with the rear face of the drawer front.
  3. Fix through the slotted holes first here as well, so that the tilt of the drawer front can be adjusted slightly if needed.

Step 6: Reassembly and Fine Adjustment

Line up the drawer with its fitted profiles horizontally with the cabinet runners. Push the drawer backwards using light, steady pressure until the plastic release levers audibly click into place.

Check the gap margins around the drawer front. If the gap at the top is wider than at the bottom, take the drawer out once more, slightly loosen the screws in the slotted holes, and adjust the height. As soon as the drawer runs smoothly and the gaps are uniform, secure the runners permanently by driving additional screws through the round fixing holes. This prevents any shifting under load later on.

Common Installation Mistakes

Even with correct measurements, fitting errors can occur that compromise the runner mechanism.

  • Incorrect screw heads: Using pan-head or round-head screws instead of countersunk screws is the primary reason ball cages grind. The protruding head catches the raceway of the balls, permanently damaging it over time.
  • Insufficient installation clearance: Ball bearing runners do not tolerate width variations. If the carcase bows in the middle, the runner will bind. Measure the internal width at the back, centre, and front. It must equal the drawer width plus 25,4 mm (twice 12,7 mm) exactly.
  • Combining conflicting mechanisms: A runner with soft-close actively pulls the drawer shut over the final few centimetres. A push-to-open mechanism actively pushes the drawer open when pressed. These two systems work against one another. Never install soft close drawer runners on a drawer intended for handleless push to open drawer runners operation.

Finishing Touches

Once the mechanism is running smoothly again, it is the ideal time to upgrade the drawer interior. Especially in kitchen or tool storage drawers, a cut-to-size non-slip drawer mat protects the base from scratches and stops contents from sliding around when closed briskly. For office furniture or mobile pedestals where you have replaced the runners, check that the locking bolt of the drawer lock still engages cleanly with the striking plate after your realignment.

Can I simply replace a roller runner with a ball bearing runner? Yes, this is generally possible provided you have the required 12,7 mm installation clearance per side. Roller runners are often mounted beneath the drawer base, whereas ball bearing runners are usually fitted centrally along the side. You will need to mark out new pilot holes in the carcase accordingly.

Why will my drawer no longer close completely? If the drawer jams on the last few centimetres, this is frequently due to a displaced ball cage (cage creep). Pull the drawer out firmly past its standard stop point to its full extension, and then push it firmly closed again. This synchronises the ball cage with the runner tracks once more.

Should I oil or grease ball bearing runners? Never use heavy grease or general penetrating oils (such as standard multi-purpose lubricants). These substances attract dust and wood chips, forming a sticky paste that locks the ball bearings. For maintenance, strictly use dry PTFE spray or dedicated non-gumming silicone spray.

Can I switch from a 400 mm runner to a 450 mm runner? That depends on the internal depth of your cabinet carcase. If you have drawer runners 400 mm installed, but the carcase offers a usable internal depth of at least 453 mm, you can easily install longer runners to make better use of the available space. The drawer box itself must also have a matching depth or be rebuilt accordingly.
