The replacement is carried out in three stages: removal, surface preparation, and reinstallation. Each step requires precision to ensure the longevity of the new lighting.

1. Disconnect the Power Supply and Test the System

Before beginning mechanical work, the system must be completely de-energised. Unplug the LED driver from the mains socket. Then disconnect the plug-in connection between the old light strip and the supply cable. Test the transformer at this stage: if the old strip remained completely dark, use a multimeter to measure the output voltage at the driver to rule out the power supply unit being the cause of the fault rather than the strip itself.

2. Loosen the Old LED Strip with Heat

Start at one end of the faulty strip. Set the hot air gun to a low setting (approx. 60 °C to 80 °C) or use a hairdryer on its highest heat setting. Warm the first 100 mm of the strip for about 15 to 20 seconds.

The heat makes the cured acrylic adhesive viscous again. Place the plastic scraper flat and gently lever up the start of the strip. Peel the strip off slowly at a shallow angle (as close to the surface as possible). Continuously heat the next section before pulling further. Much like peeling a stubborn protective film from a new sheet of acrylic glass, this process requires patience – never pull when cold, as this may cause the decorative melamine layer of the chipboard to chip off.

3. Remove Adhesive Residue Completely

Once the strip has been removed, adhesive residues usually remain on the furniture. These must be removed entirely, as the new strip will not adhere to old adhesive residues. Soak a cloth in isopropanol and rub away the residues. For stubborn patches, allow the isopropanol to sit for a short time. The alcohol dissolves the adhesive and subsequently evaporates without leaving any residue. Wipe the entire routed groove or mounting surface generously once more to eliminate any invisible grease or dust.

4. Cut the New Light Strip Accurately to Size

Unroll the new light strip and determine the required length. LED strips cannot be cut just anywhere. Look for the predetermined cut mark, which is usually indicated by a scissors symbol or a fine line between four copper-coloured solder pads. Depending on diode density, these marks are typically found every 25 mm, 50 mm, or 100 mm.

Cut the strip exactly through the centre of the copper contacts. An untidy cut will mean the final section of the strip receives no power or causes a short circuit in the connector.

5. Stick and Fix the New LED Strip

Peel back the backing film from the double-sided adhesive tape on the rear of the strip for only the first 150 mm initially. Position the strip at the starting point – make sure the supply cable can run to the connection point without any tension.

Press the strip down firmly. Use a soft cloth and apply moderate, even pressure across the strip, but do not press directly on the delicate SMD LEDs, as their casings could fracture. Work your way along section by section, peeling the backing tape further back and smoothing down the strip.

Installation tip: When running strip lighting along shelves resting on shelf supports, plan the cable route so the wires run concealed downwards behind the brackets.

6. Make the Electrical Connection

Connect the cut strip to the power supply. If you trimmed the strip and need to attach a new connection cable, use compatible clip connectors. Open the connector, slide the strip in so the copper contacts sit precisely beneath the metal pins of the connector, and push the cap shut firmly until it audibly clicks into place. Connect the cable to the driver and restore the power supply.

Common Mistakes and Professional Installation Tips

Even though the process seems straightforward, minor oversights often lead to a reduced lifespan for the new lighting.

  • Skipping degreasing: The most common reason LED strips peel off is inadequate cleaning. Even minimal skin oils from handling or residues of furniture polish prevent the adhesive from bonding.
  • Bending sharply at corners: An LED strip must never be bent at a sharp 90-degree angle. The fine circuit tracks on the PCB will snap immediately. Use dedicated L-connectors for corners or solder short cable bridges. Alternatively, lay the strip in a gentle curve (minimum 20 mm radius), provided there is sufficient clearance.
  • Lack of heat dissipation on high-output LEDs: Strips with an output of more than 9 watts per metre generate excess heat. If bonded directly onto timber, the diodes degrade extremely quickly and fail prematurely. In such cases, an aluminium profile must be recessed into or screwed onto the furniture to act as a heat sink.
  • Preventing trapped cables: Pay attention to cable routing around moving furniture parts. If the lighting is fitted inside a wall unit equipped with a flap stay, ensure the supply cable cannot get caught in the stay mechanism. Always route cables closely along the carcass.

Concealed routing of light strips and their supply cables is the hallmark of a professional installation. When assembling and lighting complete runs of cabinetry or shelving systems, cable paths should be planned from the outset during hardware installation.

Cables can be hidden neatly behind shelf supports & brackets. For floating units fixed to the wall using heavy-duty panel holders, routing a narrow groove of approx. 8 mm width and 5 mm depth into the back of the carrier panel is recommended. The LED strip can be recessed flush inside it, which not only looks tidier but also protects the strip from mechanical damage. When joining multiple carcass units with connectors & brackets, small gaps can often be utilised to route low-voltage cabling invisibly from one cabinet module to the next.

If the substrate was not cleaned using a strong degreaser (such as isopropanol), the acrylic adhesive cannot bond. Do I have to match the voltage when replacing? Absolutely. A 12 V strip connected to a 24-volt transformer will burn out within seconds.
