Replacing Plinth Feet: How to Replace Damaged Kitchen Cabinet Legs

Replacing damaged or unstable kitchen cabinet feet is a standard task during kitchen renovations or maintenance work. Older plastic legs frequently break due to material fatigue, improper sliding of cabinets, or water damage in the plinth area. Even if systems from well-known manufacturers were fitted in the original kitchen, they can easily be replaced with compatible alternatives, provided the mechanical specifications are observed.

Many manufacturers use standardised hole spacings aligned with System 32, or square configurations (for example, 38 mm x 38 mm). If the hole pattern does not match, new holes can be drilled into the carcass. Since the cabinet base usually consists of a 16 mm or 19 mm thick chipboard, choosing the correct screw length is essential to prevent piercing through into the cabinet interior.

Step-by-Step Guide: Replacing a Plinth Foot

1. Preparation and Load Relief

Cabinets must be completely emptied before lifting. This applies not only to crockery but also to heavy drawer units. If these are not removed, the carcass can warp during lifting. Just like changing a car tyre, the cabinet must have its load relieved at the specific point before the foot is removed.

2. Removing the Plinth Panel

The plinth panel is usually attached to the front feet using plastic clips. Grip the plinth at one corner and pull it forward with a firm but controlled tug. Set the panel aside.

3. Lifting the Base Cabinet

To remove the defective foot, the cabinet must be lifted slightly. For individual cabinets, manual effort and a supporting wooden block underneath are sufficient. With continuous worktops (especially those made of stone or solid wood), proceed with extreme care to avoid cracks in the surface or the silicone joints. Use a pry bar or an inflatable air wedge jack to raise the cabinet by a maximum of 10 mm to 15 mm.

4. Removing the Old Foot

Most leg tubes are simply pushed into the adapter plate. Pull the tube firmly downwards to remove it. If the adapter plate is undamaged and compatible with the new system, it can remain on the cabinet base. If it is broken or incompatible, remove the chipboard screws and take off the plate.

5. Fitting the New Adapter Plate

Position the new adapter plate. The distance to the front edge of the cabinet should match that of the old plate exactly, ensuring the plinth panel sits flush later on (usually a 40 mm to 50 mm setback). Secure the plate using 4 x 15 mm screws. Do not use longer screws, as they will penetrate the cabinet base.

6. Inserting the Leg Tube and Rough Adjustment

Measure the approximate height of the adjacent feet from the floor to the underside of the cabinet. Turn the thread of the new foot to this dimension plus around 2 mm tolerance. Push the leg tube firmly into the adapter plate until it stops. Now, slowly lower the cabinet again.

7. Precise Levelling

Fine adjustment is carried out under load, although the thread should not be over-tightened. Place the spirit level inside the cabinet or on the worktop. Rotate the foot glide by hand or using water pump pliers (for stiff threads) until the bubble is perfectly centred. Work from the highest point of the kitchen floor to the lowest. All four feet of a cabinet must have firm contact with the floor. Check this by attempting to turn the feet by hand while under load. If they turn easily, they are suspended in the air and bearing no weight.

8. Reattaching the Plinth Panel

Fit the new retaining clips to the front feet. Align the plinth panel and push it with gentle pressure against the clips until they audibly snap into place.

Additional Work While Base Cabinets Are Cleared

When base units are already emptied for foot replacement, this presents the ideal opportunity to inspect and potentially upgrade the mechanical components inside the cabinet. Old runners are frequently worn out, which manifests in jerky movement or loud operating noises.

For replacing existing roller runners, modern undermount drawer runners are ideal; they are installed concealed beneath the drawer base and offer greater lateral stability. If the entire drawer unit is to be renewed, the width of the cabinet is decisive. For standard dimensions, a kitchen cabinet drawer unit 60 cm or a kitchen cabinet drawer unit 50 cm are suitable choices.

If pots or heavy pans are to be stored, the load capacity of the runners is critical. Here, switching to heavy-duty drawer runners is advisable. These systems are designed for weights of 30 kg and upwards. To ensure a complete overview of the drawer contents, opting for full-extension drawer runners is essential. A full extension allows the drawer to open 100%, whereas a partial extension leaves part of the drawer box inside the carcass. For maximum operating convenience when fitting new runners, soft-close drawer runners ensure the drawer closes gently and silently over the final centimetres.

  • Incorrect screw length: Using screws longer than 15 mm on 16 mm thick chipboard will damage the melamine coating inside the cabinet.
  • Lack of floor contact: Failing to check whether all feet are firmly grounded after levelling with the spirit level means the entire weight rests on only two or three points. Over time, this causes the cabinet to warp.
  • Adjustment under maximum load: Significantly adjusting the height of the feet while the cabinet is fully loaded (including crockery and a heavy worktop) can strip or snap the plastic thread.
  • Incorrect setback: Fitting the adapter plate too far forward will cause the leg tube to collide with the plinth panel later.
