Upgrading tired units does not always require a full kitchen tear-out. When replacing kitchen cupboard doors, you can achieve a factory-fresh finish at a fraction of the cost simply by updating the frontals and fitting reliable, modern hardware. Getting the fit right comes down to accurate measurements, correct hinge selection, and understanding how to adjust concealed hinges once hung.
Measuring and Preparing Replacement Frontals
Before ordering new panels or drilling fixing points, precise measurements of your existing carcass and door layout are essential. British standard kitchen cabinets typically use either 18 mm or 15 mm carcass sides, which directly affects your door sizing.
- Measure the old doors: Take the height and width in millimetres from the rear of the existing door. Standard replacement doors are usually manufactured 3 to 4 mm smaller than the cabinet's outer dimensions to allow an even reveal (gap) around each edge.
- Check cabinet squareness: Measure diagonally corner-to-corner across the cabinet face. If the measurements differ, the unit is out of square, meaning you will rely heavily on hinge adjustment screws during the final alignment.
- Determine the overlay type: Most modern UK kitchens use full overlay doors (where the door covers the entire front edge of the carcass side). Inset or twin-door shared panels (half overlay) require entirely different hinge crank profiles.
Hinge Cup Drilling and Mounting Plates
The standard European concealed hinge uses a 35 mm diameter cup recessed into the back of the door. If your new doors arrive undrilled, you will need to bore these recesses accurately.
- Cup depth and edge distance: Standard hinge cups require a bore depth of 11.5 mm to 12.5 mm using a 35 mm Forstner bit. The distance from the door edge to the start of the hole (the drilling distance or tab) is usually between 3 mm and 5 mm.
- Standard hole centres: Vertical placement is commonly 100 mm from the top and bottom edges of the door to the centre of the hinge hole. For tall larder doors, fit three or four hinges evenly spaced to prevent bowing.
- Mounting plates: Fix your mounting plates to the carcass side using standard 32 mm system spacing. If the existing screw holes are worn, plug them with wooden dowels and PVA glue before redrilling pilot holes to ensure a solid fix.
Upgrading to Soft-Close Functionality
Replacing kitchen cupboard doors offers the ideal opportunity to introduce integrated soft-close technology. Modern concealed hinges feature hydraulic dampers built directly into the hinge arm or cup mechanism, preventing doors from slamming against the carcass.
If you prefer to retain existing standard sprung hinges, clip-on damper adaptors or separate piston buffers drilled into the cabinet top rail provide an effective soft-close retrofit without replacing the main hinge bodies.
Three-Way Hinge Adjustment for Clean Lines
Once your doors are hung, they will almost certainly require fine-tuning to eliminate uneven gaps and rubbing. Concealed hinges allow adjustment in three directions:

For pull handles, verify the centre-to-centre fixing dimension (commonly 96 mm, 128 mm, or 160 mm) before drilling pilot holes from the front face using a piece of scrap wood clamped at the back to prevent breakout.
