1. Check Wall Structure and Choose Wall Plugs

The type of wall dictates the fixing material. A standard plug in a plasterboard wall will tear out immediately under load.

  • Concrete and solid brick: Standard expansion plugs (nylon plugs) in combination with a matching masonry drill bit work here.
  • Aerated concrete: Use special aerated concrete fixings that cut interlockingly into the soft material.
  • Drywall (plasterboard): Strictly use hollow-wall metal anchors or spring toggle bolts. These expand behind the board and distribute the tensile force over a larger area. Alternatively, locate the studwork (timber or metal profiles) using a detector and screw the bracket directly into it.

2. Level the Carcass Exactly

Before securing large wardrobes to the wall, they must be completely upright and level. Use the spirit level on the side panel and on the front. Compensate for uneven floors using adjustable plinth feet. If the cabinet has no adjustable feet, use levelling wedges. If the carcass stands crooked and is forcefully pulled against the wall, the door gap alignments will warp irreparably.

3. Mark the Position of the Brackets

The anti-tip fitting is always attached to the top panel (the upper horizontal shelf) or high up on the solid side panels. Place the corner bracket flush against the cabinet and slide it towards the wall. Mark the drill hole on the wall with a pencil. Ensure the bracket will not interfere later with hinges, runners, or the back panel.

4. Drill Wall Holes

Check the marked area with the detector for electrical cables or water pipes. Drill the hole using the exact diameter of the wall plug (e.g. 8 mm). The drilling depth should match the plug length plus 10 mm so the screw can fully penetrate and expand the plug. Vacuum out the drilled hole afterwards. Dust significantly reduces the grip of the wall plug.

5. Mount the Bracket to the Wall

Tap the wall plug flush into the wall. Position the bracket and screw it in hand-tight using the long wall screw. Do not tighten the screw fully yet; the bracket should retain slight movement to allow for adjustments when pushing the wardrobe into place.

6. Position the Wardrobe and Screw to the Carcass

Carefully slide the wardrobe into its final position under the bracket. Check the level once more. Now screw the bracket to the top panel of the cabinet. Use the short chipboard screws for this (e.g. 4 x 16 mm, PZ or TX drive). Work with moderate torque so that the thread does not strip or tear out of the chipboard.

7. Final Inspection

Now tighten the wall screw completely. Gently but firmly shake the front edge of the cabinet. The carcass must no longer tilt forward. Only after this successful pull test should you refill your wardrobes.

Avoid Common Installation Mistakes

Even with seemingly simple installation steps, errors can happen in practice that compromise the safety of the furniture.

Fixing to the back panel: The back panel (usually a 3 mm thick MDF or HDF board) has no load-bearing function. Anchoring the anti-tip fitting with short screws solely into the back panel risks tearing it out immediately under load. Fixings must be secured into solid timber, the chipboard of the top panel, or the side panels.

Ignoring skirting boards: Many older buildings feature wide skirting boards. Pushing the wardrobe against them leaves a gap at the top against the wall. Forcing the cabinet against the wall with a screw will bend the side panel. The solution: Use spacer blocks (made of wood or plastic) between the wall and the top edge of the wardrobe, or use flexible nylon anti-tip straps, which easily bridge gaps from 50 mm to 100 mm.

Incorrect screw length on the carcass: If you use screws that are too long, they will pierce through the top panel and damage the visible interior of the wardrobe. Measure the material thickness accurately beforehand (for IKEA Pax, this is 18 mm) and select a screw that penetrates no more than 15 mm to 16 mm deep.

What should I do with sloped ceilings? If the cabinet is placed beneath a sloped ceiling, attachment to the top panel is often impossible. Can I skip the anti-tip fitting if the wardrobe is heavily loaded? That is a dangerous misconception.
