Upgrading base units with new pull-outs is a standard process to optimise ergonomics and storage space in the kitchen. When looking for hardware as an alternative to existing elements or components suitable for Nolte kitchens, precise technical planning is essential. The carcase of a fitted kitchen is generally based on industrial manufacturing standards. This means that with exact dimensions and knowledge of the hole patterns, modern runners and drawer sides can be integrated seamlessly into existing cabinets.

What to Consider for Compatibility in the Kitchen Carcase

To choose replacement parts or upgrades suitable for Nolte carcases, the internal dimensions of the cabinet and the drilling pattern must be accurately recorded. The furniture industry relies on standardised grids.

System 32 and the Line of Holes

Most kitchen carcases utilise System 32. This grid defines the position of the drill holes on the inside faces of the carcase:

  • The distance from hole centre to hole centre is exactly 32 mm.
  • The distance from the front row of holes to the front carcase edge is 37 mm.
  • The drilling diameter for standard fixings is 5 mm.

If these dimensions are present in your base unit, the technical requirements for installing standardised drawer runners are met.

Internal Carcase Depth and Nominal Length

The nominal length (NL) of the runner must match the internal carcase depth. The internal depth is the measurement from the front edge of the carcase to the back panel. For a typical kitchen worktop depth of 600 mm, the internal carcase depth is usually around 515 mm to 530 mm. In this case, a runner with a nominal length of 500 mm is installed. Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Plan the vertical layout: Determine the positions of the fronts. When installing multiple drawers above one another, choose the runner spacing so that the drawer fronts open without colliding (allowing for a 3 mm to 4 mm gap).
  2. Fit the runners: Secure the carcase runner to the side panel. If System 32 holes are present, use Euro screws (typically 6.3 x 13 mm) for the 5 mm drill holes. If there is no pre-drilled hole pattern, fix the runner directly to the timber using chipboard screws (e.g. 4 x 16 mm, countersunk). Ensure the correct setback from the front edge (usually 37 mm).
  3. Assemble the drawer sides: Screw the metal drawer sides to the cut-to-size timber base and back panel.
  4. Attach front fixing brackets: Screw the front fixing brackets onto the rear of the kitchen drawer front. Refer to the technical datasheet of the specific drawer system for precise drilling positions.
  5. Insert and adjust: Place the drawer onto the runners and push it back until it engages securely. Using the eccentric adjustment screws on the drawer sides, precisely adjust the height and tilt of the front (typically +/- 2 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Regarding Compatibility

Can I replace an old roller runner with an undermount runner? Yes, this is generally possible. However, directly swapping runners on the existing timber drawer box rarely works, as undermount runners require specific routings and drill holes on the underside of the drawer. Usually, the drawer box must be rebuilt completely or replaced with a modern drawer side system configured to Nolte standard dimensions.

How do I determine the correct nominal length for replacement hardware? Measure the length of the old runner when closed and removed from the cabinet, from the front to the rear edge. Alternatively, measure the external depth of the existing drawer box. In kitchens, these measurements are typically 450 mm or 500 mm.

Can retrofitted kitchen drawers be locked? For cabinets storing cleaning agents or sharp utensils, security may be a priority. In this case, a drawer lock can be fitted into the front. A hole (usually 19 mm cylinder diameter) is drilled through the front panel. The locking bolt engages with the inside of the carcase or an attached striking plate when locked.
