1. Calculate and Mark the Setback Dimension

- Measure the thickness of the strike plate (usually 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm).
- Add a clearance tolerance of 1.0 mm.
- Using a pencil, draw a line parallel to the front edge of the carcass, offset inwards by exactly this value (e.g. 3.0 mm). The front edge of the catch's plastic housing will align with this line.
2. Mark and Pilot-Drill Holes on the Carcass
Hold the magnetic catch against the marked line. Mark the screw hole positions with the bradawl. Drill the pilot holes approx. 10 mm deep using the 2 mm wood drill bit. Pre-drilling is essential, as driving screws into or near the edge of chipboard without pilot holes causes the material to split.
3. Fit the Magnetic Catch
Fasten the housing securely with the matching wood screws. Preferably use screws with a TX drive (Torx), as these provide better torque transfer without slipping in tight cabinet interiors. Tighten the screws hand-tight. If the catch features a slotted hole, position the screw in the centre to allow room for fine adjustment later.
4. Determine the Strike Plate Position on the Door
This is the most error-prone step, as the strike plate must meet the magnet precisely to achieve its full holding force (in kilograms).
- The tape trick: Place the strike plate onto the magnet already mounted on the carcass. Apply a small piece of double-sided adhesive tape to the back of the strike plate. Carefully close the door and press firmly in the area of the catch. Open the door again. The strike plate will now be stuck in the exact installation position on the inside of the door.
- The chalk trick: Alternatively, mark the contact tips of the magnet with chalk or a soft pencil, close the door, and press. The mark reveals the exact centre point for the strike plate.
5. Screw the Strike Plate in Place
Mark the drilling point through the hole of the strike plate. Pay very close attention to the length of the screw. If the furniture door is 16 mm thick, the screw (including the thickness of the strike plate) must not exceed 14 mm in length. Pre-drill here with 2 mm as well, but to a maximum depth of 10 mm. Use a drill depth stop or mark the drilling depth with tape on the drill bit to avoid drilling through the front. Screw the plate into position.
6. Fine Adjustment and Testing
Close the door. Inspect the alignment and gaps from the outside.
- If the door protrudes slightly on the catch side, loosen the screws on the carcass slightly and slide the catch back by 1 mm to 2 mm in the slotted hole.
- If the door hits the carcass abruptly before the magnet engages, move the catch further forward.
Common Installation Mistakes
- Incorrect screw selection: Screws that are too thick (e.g. Ø 4.5 mm) will split the core material. Screws that are too long will pierce through the front panel. Consistently use Ø 3.0 mm or Ø 3.5 mm.
- Internal obstruction: Before installation, check whether internal drawers, pull-outs, or shelves will be obstructed by the catch. On office furniture, ensure that wiring runs routed towards a desk cable grommet are not pinched.
- Ignoring hinge adjustment: A magnetic catch cannot correct completely misaligned hinges. Adjust the reveal gaps (height, lateral, and depth) correctly via the adjustment screws on the concealed cup hinge before fitting the catch.
- Rigid strike plates on twisted doors: If the door is slightly warped, the strike plate will not meet the magnet flat. The holding power drops drastically.
