Step-by-Step Guide: Replacing Drawer Runners Completely
The damping system works on the principle of a hydraulic shock absorber, redirecting the kinetic energy of the closing movement into the cylinder to absorb impact. For this cylinder to trigger correctly, the runner must be installed completely level and parallel.
Step 1: Remove the drawer and dismantle old fittings
Pull the drawer out completely. With traditional roller runner drawer slides, lift the front of the drawer slightly to clear the roller stop. For ball bearing slides, there is usually a small plastic release lever on the side that must be pressed up or down to separate the member. Pull the ball cages of the carcass runners fully forward. Align the drawer with its attached profiles horizontally into the carcass runners. Over the final 30 mm to 50 mm, the drawer should be caught by the damper, slowed down, and pulled shut gently.
Alternative Method: Retrofitting External Soft-Close Dampers
If the existing runners are in good condition and the clearance gap does not permit full replacement, external damper modules can be fitted. These consist of two parts: the damping cylinder itself (screwed to the carcass wall) and the catch pin/activator (screwed to the drawer box).

Common Installation Errors and How to Avoid Them
1. Protruding screw heads Never use pan-head screws for mounting telescopic runners unless explicitly required by the design. A protruding screw head will grind against the ball cage, damage plastic components, and lead to runner failure.
2. Asymmetric installation If the left and right carcass runners are not installed at the exact same height or depth, the drawer will rack. The soft-close mechanism will jam or only trigger on one side. Always use a spirit level and measure from the base of the carcass.
3. Confusing closing mechanisms A common planning error: soft-close cannot be combined with a mechanical touch-release system. Soft-close and push-to-open mechanisms work in opposite ways. To open a handleless front by pressing it, you need push to open drawer runners. These do not feature a damper, but rather a strong spring that pushes the drawer outward.
