Method A: Complete Hinge Replacement

The cleanest approach is replacing the old hinges with new soft-close concealed hinges. Here, the damping cylinder is integrated directly into the hinge arm or cup.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Determine the door overlay: Before fitting a soft-close hinge, the overlay type of the door must be defined.
  • Full overlay: When closed, the door rests fully over the cabinet side panel.
  • Half overlay (twin overlay): Two doors share a single central cabinet divider.
  • Inset: The door sits flush within the cabinet carcass openings.
  1. Dismantle old hardware: Undo the screws on the cruciform mounting plate on the inside of the cabinet. Lift off the door and unscrew the old hinge cups from the front.
  2. Check hole dimensions: Standard concealed hinges require a 35 mm diameter hole in the door front. The depth is usually 11.5 mm to 13 mm. If the dimensions match, the new soft-close hinges can be inserted directly.
  3. Fit the hinges: Insert the soft-close hinge into the cup hole. Align it at an exact 90° angle to the door edge using a try square and secure it with two 3.5 x 16 mm chipboard screws.
  4. Attach mounting plates: Screw the new cruciform mounting plates to the cabinet side. Ideally, use the existing line borings (System 32).
  5. Hang and adjust the door: Clip the hinge arm onto the mounting plate (with clip-on technology) or screw it tight. Using the eccentric adjustment screws on the hinge arm, the door can now be adjusted in three dimensions (height, side, and depth) until the reveal gaps run precisely parallel.

Method B: Retrofitting Surface-Mounted Door Dampers

If the existing hinges are intact and do not need replacing, separate dampers can be installed. These are either clipped onto the existing hinge arm (manufacturer-specific) or screwed onto the cabinet side as a standalone component.

  1. Positioning: The damper is mounted on the inside of the cabinet on the handle side. For standard doors, a single damper in the top third is sufficient.
  2. Alignment: The damper plunger must be slightly compressed when the door is closed, but must not push the door open. The front edge of the damper housing usually sits flush with the front edge of the cabinet side.
  3. Fastening: Secure into the carcass with two screws. Test the closing action and, if necessary, adjust the damper forwards or backwards using the slotted hole.

Part 2: Retrofitting Drawers

A soft-close drawer significantly increases operating convenience, especially in kitchens or workshops where heavy loads are moved. In most cases, the entire set of drawer runners must be replaced.

Preparation and Dimensional Checks

Before installing drawer runners with damping, the installation dimensions must be measured precisely.

  • Installation width (clearance): Standard ball bearing runners require exactly 12.7 mm of space between the drawer side and the cabinet inner wall (on both sides, meaning 25.4 mm in total).
  • Nominal length: Measure the depth of the drawer box. The runner length (e.g. 250 mm, 300 mm, 500 mm) must not exceed the internal cabinet depth. For compact pieces of furniture, drawer runners 250 mm or drawer runners 300 mm are suitable.
  • Extension type: A full extension runner provides 100 percent access to the drawer contents, whereas a single extension leaves part of the drawer inside the carcass. Full extension drawer runners are the standard for modern furniture.

Installing Soft-Close Drawer Runners

  1. Remove the drawer: Pull out the drawer box and release the catches on the old runners. Completely dismantle both the cabinet and drawer runner profiles.
  2. Separate the new runners: On ball bearing runners, the inner profile (which screws to the drawer) must be separated from the outer profile (cabinet). To do this, push the small black plastic lever inside the runner up or down and pull the components apart.
  3. Mount the drawer profile: Screw the narrow inner profile to the outside of the drawer box. It should sit flush with the front edge of the drawer front. Use countersunk screws so that the screw heads do not catch against the ball bearings during insertion.
  4. Align the cabinet profile: Mark the exact height inside the carcass. Draw a horizontal line using a spirit level or marking gauge. The front edge of the soft-close drawer runners is usually positioned 2 mm behind the front edge of the cabinet carcass to leave clearance for the front panel.
  5. Secure with screws: Fix the cabinet runner through the slotted holes. This allows subsequent height adjustment of roughly 1 mm to 2 mm.
  6. Insert and test: Guide the drawer with the mounted inner profiles horizontally into the cabinet runners. Push the drawer closed with light pressure until the locking mechanism audibly engages. The drawer self-closing mechanism should now engage over the final 30 mm to 50 mm and draw the drawer gently shut.

  • Confusing soft-close with push-to-open: This is the most common conceptual error. Soft-close draws the door/drawer shut with damping. Push-to-open (tip-on) pushes handleless fronts outwards when pressed. These two mechanisms work against one another. If you want to damp handleless fronts, highly specialised combination fittings are required; standard soft-close hinges will not work.
  • Too many dampers on lightweight fronts: A soft-close hinge has noticeable resistance. On small, lightweight doors (e.g. wall units), a single damped hinge (usually fitted at the top) combined with an undamped hinge is often sufficient.   • Incorrect screw heads on drawer runners: If pan-head or round-head screws are used on ball bearing runners instead of countersunk screws, the ball cage catches on the screw head when pulled out, causing the runner to jam.

What is the difference between self-closing and soft-close?
