System 32 and the Hole Pattern

Most European kitchen manufacturers construct their cabinets according to System 32. This means that the vertical rows of holes inside the carcase have an exact spacing of 32 mm between them. The distance from the front edge of the carcase to the first row of holes is standard at 37 mm. The drill hole diameter is typically 5 mm. If you are searching for runners as an alternative to factory-fitted components, the new slides must support this grid dimension.

Determining the Correct Nominal Length

The length of the guide rail is known as the nominal length. It is based on the depth of the drawer box, not the depth of the cabinet carcase. For a base unit with a standard depth of 560 mm, a kitchen cabinet runner 50 cm is usually used.   1. Dismantling: Pull the drawer out completely. For undermount slides, you usually need to squeeze two plastic clips on the underside to release the drawer from the runner. Next, remove the old runners from the cabinet carcase using a screwdriver.
  2. Checking the hole pattern: Hold the new runner against the existing System 32 hole line. If the grid aligns, the existing drill holes can be reused. If not, mark the new positions precisely. The front edge of the runner typically sits 2 mm behind the front edge of the carcase (excluding the drawer front).
  3. Mounting the carcase runners: Screw the runner into the cabinet. Use at least three fixing points: front, centre, and rear. For heavy drawers, an additional screw in the front third is recommended to absorb leverage when fully extended.
  4. Drawer preparation: For side ball bearing slides, detach the inner member and screw it to the side of the drawer. For undermount runners, screw the new locking catches to the front underside of the drawer base.
  5. Fitting and adjustment: Slide the drawer onto the runners until the clips engage with an audible click. Check the alignment of the gaps. Most modern front-locking devices feature small adjustment wheels to correct front tilt and height by 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm.

Upgrading Cabinet Doors as Well

When bringing kitchen drawers up to modern technical standards, many also choose to upgrade the doors on wall and base units. For consistent ease of use, concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with soft close are used here. These are compatible with the standard 35 mm diameter cup hole. When replacing hinges, ensure you choose the correct mounting type (full overlay, half overlay, or inset) so that the door sits perfectly in front of the carcase after installation.

What load capacity is required for kitchen drawers? For cutlery drawers, a dynamic load capacity of 25 kg to 30 kg is entirely adequate.
