Step-by-Step Solution: Cleaning and Lubricating Runners

To resolve the issue permanently, the mechanism must be exposed. Simply spraying into the drawer gap from the outside rarely achieves success.

1. Remove the Drawer

Pull the drawer out fully. On a side-mounted ball bearing runner, there is usually a small plastic lever inside the slide profile. Push this lever up on one side and down on the other to slide the drawer forward and out. Modern undermount drawer runners, which sit concealed beneath the drawer base, feature clip catches on the front underside. These simply need to be squeezed together.

2. Clean the Profiles

Spray the brake cleaner onto a cloth and thoroughly wipe down the running tracks on both the carcass and the drawer slides. In cases of heavy contamination, you can spray the cleaner directly into the profile and brush it out. Ensure the ball bearing cage is completely free of black grease residue.

3. Inspect the Mechanism

Check the components. On a roller drawer runner, check whether the plastic rollers show cracks or run out of round. On telescopic slides, the ball cage must be fully intact. If individual steel balls are already missing, the component is irreparably damaged.

4. Apply Lubricant Properly

Apply the PTFE spray or white spray grease specifically onto the tracks and the ball cage. For roller runners, a single drop of silicone spray onto the roller axle is sufficient. Less is more here — excess grease only attracts new dust.

5. Reassembly and Running-In

Reinsert the drawer completely level into the runners. Slide it open and closed several times. The lubricant will now distribute evenly along the entire length of the profiles. The squeaking should disappear immediately.

Specialist Mechanisms: Soft-Close and Handleless Systems

Take extra care with runners featuring add-on functions. These mechanisms must not come into contact with aggressive cleaners or spray grease.

For workshops or deep kitchen pan drawers, consider the load rating. When heavy pans or tools are involved, heavy duty drawer runners with a load capacity of 45 kg or more are the right choice. For building complete cabinet internals from scratch, pre-configured drawer systems are ideal, where the drawer sides are already matched to the appropriate runner technology.
