Surface-Mounted Lock vs Mortice Lock: Furniture Locks for Drawers and Cupboards

Anyone wishing to lock a cupboard or drawer securely faces a fundamental design decision when selecting furniture locks. The choice between surface mounting and recessing the lock determines not only the installation effort, but also the mechanical strength and the appearance on the inside of the furniture unit. What is a surface-mounted lock?

The surface-mounted lock (or rim lock) is the most common design in modern furniture making. The entire lock body sits on the back of the door or drawer front and is fixed with wood screws (typically 3 mm or 3.5 mm in diameter).

For installation, only a single through-hole for the cylinder needs to be drilled into the furniture front. The cylinder is pushed through the drilled hole from the inside until the lock body rests flat against the wood. The bezel ring (rosette) on the outside conceals the cut edge of the hole. What is a mortice lock?

A mortice lock is recessed into the edge or back of the furniture front. To achieve this, an accurately sized recess must be routed or chiselled into the material. The lock casing disappears completely inside the timber, meaning the inside surface of the door or drawer forms a smooth, flush face without protruding components.

This design is traditionally rooted in solid wood furniture making and antique restoration. Installation requires precision tools such as a router or wood chisels. Because of its flush fit, the lock sits anchored inside the timber, which increases stability against external force.

Technical differences in detail

Both lock types serve the same purpose, yet differ in construction and furniture requirements.

  • Installation effort: The surface-mounted lock requires only a cylinder hole and is screwed into place. The mortice lock demands precise routing or chiselling, requiring more time and advanced woodworking skills.
  • Material thickness: A mortice lock requires sufficient material thickness. With standard 16 mm chipboard, routing a pocket is virtually impossible without weakening the front. Material thicknesses of 19 mm or 22 mm upwards are required here. A surface-mounted lock can be fitted regardless of board thickness, provided the cylinder length suits the material depth.
  • Mechanical stability: Because the mortice lock is fully enclosed by the surrounding wood, force from prying attempts is distributed across the entire material. A surface-mounted lock is held purely by its fixing screws, which can pull out under strong mechanical force.
  • The backset: A critical dimension for both types is the backset. This describes the distance from the centre of the keyhole to the edge of the lock (or the door edge). On surface-mounted locks, the backset is often between 15 mm and 40 mm. It must be measured precisely so that the locking bolt aligns correctly with the striking plate on the carcass.

Which lock is suitable for which application?

The decision depends heavily on your project, the material, and the available tools.

Choose a surface-mounted lock if:

  • You want to retrofit a cupboard lock.
  • The furniture front consists of relatively thin chipboard or MDF (e.g. 16 mm).
  • Installation effort needs to be kept to a minimum.
  • Standard drawer systems need to be fitted with a lock.

Choose a mortice lock if:

  • You are building or restoring solid wood furniture.
  • The inside face of the door must remain completely flush (e.g. to prevent internal drawer accessories from catching when closing the door).
  • Higher mechanical resistance against prying is required.

Specific lock variants in furniture construction

Beyond the basic installation type (surface-mounted vs recessed), the mechanical action determines the application.

For tall cupboard doors, a simple single-point bolt is often insufficient because the top and bottom of the door can flex. In this scenario, a cupboard lock with locking rods (also known as an espagnolette lock) is used. This is usually surface mounted. Turning the key extends metal rods upwards and downwards, locking the door at three points simultaneously.

When multiple units need to be opened with the same key (keyed-alike systems), an interchangeable furniture lock cylinder is advantageous. In this case, the lock core is inserted separately into the lock housing.

A specialised variant is the cam lock. It is inserted through a single hole in sheet metal or very thin wood and secured with a nut on the reverse. Instead of an extending bolt, a rigid metal cam rotates by 90° or 180° behind the frame.
