Mobile pedestals are essential modules in offices and workshops. They offer flexibility, but must remain completely rigid and secure once moved to their final position. Inaccurate castor adjustment or improper brake locking leads to instability. Particularly on uneven floors, this instability transfers to the carcass made of chipboard or MDF, ultimately distorting the gap alignment of the front panels. This technical guide explains in detail how furniture castors are professionally installed, levelled for height, and locked. How the Locking Brake on Furniture Castors Works

In professional furniture construction, a distinction is made between fixed castors (rigid) and swivel castors. Mobile pedestals generally use four swivel castors, of which at least the front two must be equipped with a total brake.

When the brake lever is pressed downwards, the mechanism engages with the assembly like a mechanical anchor. Unlike a simple wheel brake that merely presses a brake shoe against the tread, a total brake forms a positive mechanical lock with the ball bearing in the swivel head. The castor can neither rotate on its own axis nor roll forwards or backwards. This is crucial when opening drawers with full-extension runners, as dynamic pulling forces act directly upon the unit.

The castor is attached to the carcass either via a mounting plate (usually with four chipboard screws aligned with the system grid) or via a threaded pin, typically M8 or M10. The latter variant allows for precise height compensation.

Required Tools and Materials

For professional installation and adjustment, fitters require the following tools:

  • Open-ended spanner: Matching the lock nut of the threaded pin (often 13 mm A/F or 14 mm A/F).
  • Spirit level: For precise carcass alignment.

Step-by-Step Guide: Adjusting Furniture Castors and the Locking Brake

The following guide refers to swivel castors with a threaded pin, as these allow active height regulation.

1. Calculate Load Capacity and Position Castors

Before making adjustments, ensure that the castors are rated for the total weight. The load capacity in kg per castor is calculated in practice using the formula `(Self-weight + payload) / 3`. On uneven floors, often only three castors make full contact with the ground at any given moment. Castors with locking brakes must be installed at the front of the unit so they remain accessible at all times.

2. Adjust Height via the Threaded Pin

Once the mobile unit is in its intended position — for instance, under a desk with a neatly routed desk cable grommet — place the spirit level on the top panel. If the floor is uneven, lift the unit slightly. Use the open-ended spanner to turn the nut on the threaded pin of the relevant castor. Screwing the pin outwards (extending the distance between castor and carcass) raises the level. The typical adjustment range is 5 mm - 15 mm.

3. Tighten the Lock Nut

As soon as the unit is perfectly level, the adjustment must be locked in place. To do this, tighten the upper lock nut firmly against the tee nut or threaded insert embedded in the carcass using the open-ended spanner. Without this step, operational vibrations during movement would cause the threaded pin to wind itself in over time.

4. Engage the Total Brake

To lock the unit securely, press the brake lever firmly downwards by foot or hand until it audibly clicks into place. The force required is inherently high because an internal spring clamp physically locks the swivel bearing. To check the lock, attempt to twist the front of the unit gently. The swivel ring on the front castors must not exhibit any play.

Common Installation and Adjustment Mistakes

  • Incorrect screw selection: Using chipboard screws that are too short for mounting plates (e.g. 3 x 15 mm instead of 4 x 17 mm) risks tear-out under dynamic loads. Sturdy connectors & brackets are essential.
  • Omitting height compensation: Locking a unit rigidly on an uneven surface twists the carcass. This causes sticking drawers and rubbing doors.
  • Lubricant on the tread: When oiling the swivel bearing, never allow lubricant to reach the polyurethane tread, as this causes the brake shoe to slip.

If a mobile pedestal has been used over a prolonged period with unevenly adjusted castors, the carcass geometry can twist. Even after correctly releveling the castors, front gap margins often remain misaligned. In this case, cabinet door hinges must be readjusted. Mobile units and small side cupboards typically use concealed hinges, known as cup hinges. The standard drilling diameter for the cup is 35 mm.

Adjustment is carried out in three dimensions directly on the fitted hinge using a standard PZ2 screwdriver.

Depth Adjustment (Gap Between Door and Carcass)

The rear screw on the hinge arm controls depth. Loosening this screw slightly allows the door to be moved forwards or backwards by approximately 2 mm - 3 mm. The gap should run parallel and be set tight enough that the door does not foul the carcass during opening. After adjustment, retighten the screw hand-tight.

Side Adjustment (Door Overlay and Tilt)

The front screw on the hinge arm regulates lateral overlay. Turning this screw clockwise moves the door edge towards the outside of the carcass. Turning it anticlockwise moves the door towards the centre of the carcass. For a full overlay application (door covers the carcass side panel completely), this screw is used to bring a sagging door back parallel with the top edge.

Height Adjustment (Vertical Alignment)

Door height is adjusted at the cruciform mounting plate fixed to the inner carcass wall, typically installed within the System 32 hole pattern. By slightly loosening both mounting plate fixing screws, the entire door and cup hinge assembly can be shifted up or down by roughly ± 2 mm. On modern fittings, this is achieved via an eccentric cam screw in the centre of the plate without having to loosen the fixing screws.

Fitter's note: If a unit includes an overhead flap or lift-up lid, check not only the hinges after carcass levelling, but also ensure the flap stays operate with synchronised movement and correct tension.

FAQ on Adjusting Furniture Castors and Fittings

How much load capacity is required for an office pedestal castor? An unladen standard office pedestal made from 19 mm coated chipboard often weighs 20 to 25 kg on its own. Added to this is the weight of files, tools, or shelves resting on shelf supports. Castors should therefore offer a minimum load rating of 40 kg to 50 kg each.

Why is the locking brake no longer holding effectively? This is usually caused by wear or dirt buildup. If dust or carpet fibres wrap around the axle, the brake shoe can no longer press squarely against the wheel. Cleaning the axle and tread typically restores full braking function.

Can threaded pin castors be replaced with plate-mounted castors? Technically yes, though it requires minor furniture modifications. If a tee nut is fitted, it must be removed. A mounting plate (similar to a panel support bracket) is then screwed flush onto the base panel. The overall height of the replacement castor must be calculated precisely to avoid unintentionally altering the unit height.

Can door dampers be retrofitted if the unit rattles when moved? Yes. If the cup hinge lacks integrated soft-close damping, clip-on dampers can be attached to the hinge arm, or separate barrel dampers can be drilled into the carcass front edge. This stops doors from banging open or rattling during transit.
