Determining the Overlay Type

The most crucial criterion when replacing or installing new hinges is the position of the door relative to the carcass side.

  • Full overlay: When closed, the door covers almost the entire front edge of the carcass side panel, leaving only a narrow gap. Concealed hinges full overlay are used here. The hinge arm is straight (cranking 0 mm).
  • Half overlay (dual or twin overlay): Two doors share a single central carcass side panel. Each door covers only half of the front edge. Concealed hinges half overlay are required for this. The hinge arm has a slight bend (cranking 9.5 mm).

Defining the Opening Angle

  2. Check dimensions: Measure the cup distance (the dimension from the edge of the drilled cup hole to the door edge). This is usually between 3 mm and 6 mm.

  • Fasten the carcass runner horizontally to the internal side wall.
  • Screw the mating drawer member to the side of the drawer box.
  • Slide the drawer in horizontally until the ball bearing runner mechanism audibly clicks into engagement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I retrofit soft-close to any cabinet? Yes, in the vast majority of cases. If the existing hinges use standard dimensions, they can be swapped directly for soft-close hinges. Alternatively, surface-mounted screw-on dampers can be installed on the carcass interior regardless of hinge style.

What is the difference between soft-close and push-to-open? These are two opposing mechanical systems. Soft-close (damping) slows down a closing door and pulls it gently shut. Push-to-open (or tip-on) is an ejection mechanism for handleless fronts: pressing the closed door triggers a spring that pushes the door open slightly.
