A precise approach protects the material from damage and ensures that the furniture can safely bear its intended load. In this guide, we walk through the assembly of a typical bookcase unit made from chipboard or MDF step by step.

Scope of Delivery and Preparation

Before beginning the actual assembly, check the components provided. Unpack all boxes flat on the floor. Use the cardboard packaging as an underlay to prevent scratches to the decor finish.

Sorting your fittings before getting started works just like laying out surgical instruments – it prevents frantic searching when wood glue is already setting or when you are balancing a heavy panel. Sort screws, wooden dowels, and connectors into small containers. Check the parts list to ensure all hardware is present.

Required Tools

For a seamless assembly, keep the following tools within easy reach:

  • Cordless screwdriver with matching bits (usually PZ or TX)
  • Manual screwdriver for fine adjustments
  • Rubber mallet (a metal hammer can damage the edges)
  • Spirit level or cross-line laser
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Drill with masonry drill bit (for wall mounting)

Step-by-Step Assembly

Assembling a shelving unit is usually carried out from the bottom upwards or lying flat on its back. Laying the unit flat is preferred for tall furniture, as the components can be screwed together without the need for continuous support.

1. Fit Glides and Plinth

Start with the bottom panel. If provided, knock the plastic glides into the pre-drilled holes using a rubber mallet. For shelving with a separate plinth or base frame, secure this to the bottom panel using wooden dowels and screws. When using wooden dowels, you can optionally add a small drop of wood glue into the drill hole to increase overall rigidity.

2. Attach Side Panels

Next, connect the side panels to the bottom panel. In modern flat-pack furniture, cam lock fittings are typically used here.

  • Screw the metal connecting pins (cam dowels) into the designated 5 mm holes in the bottom panel.
  • Position the side panel onto the pins.
  • Insert the cam lock housing into the large 15 mm hole in the side panel. Ensure the small arrow on the housing points towards the metal pin.
  • Turn the cam lock housing clockwise by approximately 180° using a manual screwdriver until it noticeably tightens.

Repeat this process for the second side panel and subsequently for the top panel. The carcase basic frame is now fully assembled.

3. Insert the Back Panel

The back panel is not merely decorative; it is the most critical component for structural stability. It prevents the shelf unit from racking sideways under shear forces.

  • With the unit resting face down, place the back panel on top and align it precisely.
  • Measure the diagonals of the shelving unit (corner to corner). If both measurements are identical to the millimetre, the carcase is perfectly square.
  • Nail or screw the back panel firmly in place. The spacing between nails should be around 10 cm - 15 cm.
  • For side panels with grooves, simply slide the back panel in from the top before fitting the top panel.

4. Shelves and Supports

Stand the shelving unit upright. For adjustable shelving, insert shelf supports into the pre-drilled holes along the side panels. Most manufacturers use the System 32 standard, where holes are spaced 32 mm apart. Insert four studs at your desired height and rest the shelf on top. For heavier loads, metal shelf supports with a small rubber pad are recommended to prevent the shelf from slipping.

Wall Fixing and Anti-Tip Protection

Freestanding shelving units must be secured to the wall. As soon as weight is placed on the front edges of the shelves, the centre of gravity shifts forward dangerously.

Use small metal brackets for anti-tip protection. One leg is screwed onto the top panel, and the other into the wall. Choose the correct wall plug for your specific wall construction (e.g. plasterboard cavity fixings, expansion plugs for concrete or solid masonry).

If you are not building a freestanding bookcase but mounting shelves directly to the wall, the procedure changes. In this scenario, the hardware carries the entire load. Use heavy-duty shelf brackets or a metal shelf support for such installations. These are anchored securely to the wall with robust screws (e.g. 6 mm or 8 mm diameter). The wooden board is then screwed securely from underneath through the shelf bracket. When selecting shelf brackets and supports, always pay attention to the specified load capacity in kilograms and the leverage effect created by deep shelf boards.

  • Cordless Screwdriver Torque: Set the torque limiter on your cordless drill to a low setting. Chipboard strips easily if screws are over-tightened.
  • Back Panel Nails: Ensure you strike the nails completely perpendicular to the panel. A crooked nail can easily burst through the inside surface of the side panel and ruin the decor finish.
  • Missing Pre-Drilled Holes: If you need to attach additional brackets where no holes exist, pierce the spot lightly using a bradawl or small nail. This prevents the screw tip from slipping when starting.

How much weight can an internal shelf hold?
