Step-by-Step Guide: Installing the Base Frame

Step 1: Measuring and Positioning the Flanges

The outer frame panels of the unit are typically 39 mm thick. The solid areas where a screw can find a firm hold are restricted to the outer edges (approx. 30 mm to 40 mm inwards).

  1. Place the carcass flat on the floor with the underside facing upwards.
  2. Measure 20 mm inwards from each outer edge. This marks the safe zone for screw fixing.
  3. Position the floor flange. A 3/4 inch flange generally has an outer diameter of 85 mm.
  4. Align the flange so that at least two, ideally three of the fixing holes sit precisely over the solid edge area of the chipboard. The fourth hole may extend into the hollow section over the honeycomb core.
  5. Mark the drill holes with a pencil.

Step 2: Pre-drilling the Fixing Holes

Pre-drilling is essential on melamine-coated panels to prevent the finish from cracking and the chipboard from splitting.

  1. Insert the 3 mm wood drill bit into the cordless drill.
  2. Set the depth stop to 15 mm (when using 16 mm screws). If no stop is available, mark 15 mm on the drill bit using a piece of adhesive tape.
  3. Pre-drill the marked holes perpendicularly at a precise 90° angle.

Step 3: Screwing the Flanges into Place

Always use pan head screws for metal flanges. When driven into a non-countersunk metal hole, countersunk screws exert a wedging action that can damage the flange or snap the screw.

  1. Position the flange over the pre-drilled holes.
  2. Drive in the screws (e.g. 4 x 16 mm) using the appropriate TX bit.
  3. Set the torque on your cordless driver to a low-to-medium level to avoid overtightening the screw in the chipboard. Once a screw strips, it loses 80% of its holding power.

Note on hollow section holes: If a hole inevitably ends up over the hollow area, a standard wood screw will not grip. A specialist cavity plug can be used here, although the main load must always be borne by the screws driven into the solid timber perimeter.

Step 4: Assembling the Pipe Components

  1. Screw the threaded pipe hand-tight into the fitted flange.
  2. Screw the end cap onto the bottom end of the pipe.
  3. Stick a felt pad neatly onto the bottom of the end cap to prevent scratches on hard floors (parquet, laminate, tiles).

Step 5: Uprighting and Anti-Tip Protection

  1. Turn the unit upright using two people. Avoid rolling the furniture over its new legs, as this puts extreme leverage on the fixings and can tear out the chipboard.
  2. Check with the spirit level that the furniture stands plumb. On uneven floors, pipe threads can only be adjusted minimally (by unscrewing the end cap slightly), which compromises stability. 1. Choosing screws that are too long The outer walls of the unit are exactly 39 mm thick. If screws with a length of 40 mm or more are used, they will penetrate the interior of the shelving unit. Use screws of maximum dimension 4 x 20 mm.

2. Fitting in the centre of the base panel If the flanges are placed too far towards the centre for aesthetic reasons, all four screws will grip only into the paper honeycomb core. The base frame will tear out of the carcass under the slightest lateral load. Installation must be carried out within the solid edge area.

3. Using the wrong screw drive Using worn bits or confusing PH (Phillips) with PZ (Pozidriv) causes the driver to slip and strips the screw head. This makes future tightening or dismantling impossible.

4. Skipping pre-drilling Driving 4 mm screws directly into the edge zone of the chipboard without pre-drilling inevitably leads to cracks in the melamine coating. Moisture can then penetrate and cause the material to swell.
