Door Dampers & Door Buffers — Silicone Buffers vs Drill-In Dampers

A door damper slows down the closing movement of cabinet doors and prevents loud slamming against the carcase. Whilst stick-on silicone buffers merely cushion the impact passively, mechanical drill-in dampers actively engage with the kinematics and ensure controlled, material-protecting closing thanks to an integrated oil-pressure or gas-pressure cylinder.

What exactly are door dampers and stop buffers?

Mechanical damping systems for furniture construction reduce the kinetic energy of a closing cupboard door. When the spring of a hinge pulls the door shut in the final degrees of the closing angle, acceleration occurs. At this point, a mechanical damper works like a miniaturised shock absorber in a car chassis: a piston displaces a fluid medium (usually oil) inside the cylinder, increasing mechanical resistance and gently reducing the door speed just before it hits the cabinet edge. This technique is known in hardware technology as Soft-Close.

In contrast are passive stop buffers. These have no moving parts. They cushion the final contact between door and carcase entirely through the elastic nature of their material, preventing direct wood-to-wood contact.

Types and variants of furniture damping

Depending on the construction of the cabinet and the type of hinge used, different damping systems are deployed:

  • Stick-on stop buffers: Often referred to as elastic buffers. They consist of flexible plastics such as polyurethane or silicone, are self-adhesive, and are applied directly to the front edge of the carcase. They are available in a dome shape for minimal contact areas or as a flat profile.
  • Drill-in dampers: Cylindrical components that are drilled flush into the end face of the carcase panel. Only the movable plunger protrudes. They provide an invisible and space-saving solution.
  • Screw-on dampers: These dampers are mounted on the inside of the cabinet using special adapter plates. Fastening is usually carried out with matching wood screws and furniture screws.
  • Clip-on dampers: Modular damping elements that are clipped onto the hinge arm of a compatible concealed cup hinge at a later stage without tools.
  • Integrated damping: The most modern form of door damping. The damping cylinder sits invisibly directly inside the hinge cup of the concealed hinge.

Dimensions, standards, and typical values

Precise dimensions are crucial for professional installation and selection, as incorrect tolerances can cause tension in the door front.

  • Silicone buffers: Typical diameters range from 7 mm to 12 mm. The height varies between 1.5 mm and 3 mm. For overlay doors (corner stop), the hinge must be adjusted accordingly to compensate for the 1.5 mm gap.
  • Drill-in dampers: Usually require an exact drill hole with a diameter of 10 mm. The drilling depth is mostly 50 mm. Less frequently, variants with a 5 mm diameter are used, fitting directly into the line of holes (known as System 32).
  • Activation angle: Mechanical dampers engage in the closing process from an opening angle of around 30° and brake the door over the remaining millimetres.

Use and installation

The choice of the right damper depends on the weight of the door and the desired appearance. For lightweight fronts made of thin chipboard, two simple elastic buffers at the top and bottom corners are often sufficient. The surface must always be degreased before sticking them on.

Heavy fronts made of MDF or solid wood require mechanical door dampers to safely absorb the high mass. Absolute precision is required when installing drill-in dampers: the hole must be drilled at an exact 90-degree angle to the edge. If the drill bit wanders, the plunger will jam and block when closing the door. For retrofitting screw-on dampers, the damper is positioned on the handle side of the carcase to make optimal use of the closing door's leverage.

Door damping is only one part of modern cabinet hardware fittings. Furniture connectors provide the fundamental construction and stability of the carcase, drawing the base, top, and side panels together without play. If the damped doors need additional protection against unauthorised access, furniture locks are used.
