What is a Drawer Box System? Double-Walled Drawers vs Wooden Drawers
A drawer box system is a prefabricated drawer system featuring double-walled metal side panels, in which the runner is usually invisibly integrated. In contrast to the classic wooden drawer, which consists of four screwed wooden panels and a separate runner, drawer box systems only require a cut-to-size wooden base and a back panel for final assembly.
What exactly is a drawer box system?
Drawer box systems represent the modern standard in furniture construction. The metallic side panel conceals the actual mechanism. Like the chassis of a car, the drawer box system forms the load-bearing framework of the drawer, into which only the bodywork in the form of a wooden base and back panel is inserted.
The runner unit is generally based on an undermount runner. Adjustment of the gap pattern takes place directly on the drawer side via integrated adjusting screws for height, side, and often also the tilt of the furniture front.
Double-walled drawer vs classic wooden drawer
When constructing drawers, joiners and installers face a choice between two basic principles:
- Drawer box system (double-walled): The side panels are made of powder-coated steel or aluminium. Cutting the base and back panel (usually 16 mm thick chipboard) is done squarely without complex routing. The front is clipped in without tools using special front fixing brackets.
- Classic wooden drawer: All four walls consist of engineered wood or solid timber. The base must be grooved in or screwed on. The runner is mounted separately on the outside or beneath the base. Here, visible roller drawer runners or concealed undermount drawer runners are frequently used.
Dimensions, standards and typical values
Drawer box systems are available in standardised nominal lengths that are precisely matched to the cabinet depth. Common lengths range from 250 mm - 650 mm. For typical kitchen base cabinets, the 500 mm drawer runner dimension is most commonly installed.
- System heights: A distinction is made between standard drawers (often referred to as N-height or M-height, approx. 68 mm - 85 mm) and deep pan drawers (often with a gallery rail or glass add-on, height up to over 200 mm).
- Load capacity: Standard versions support around 30 kg. For wide pull-outs, heavy-duty drawer runners with a dynamic load capacity of 40 kg - 65 kg are used.
- Extension type: Almost all modern drawer box systems are designed from the factory as full extension drawer runners. A full extension can be pulled out 100%, while a partial extension remains around 25% inside the cabinet carcass.
Mechanics and comfort features
Movement technology is firmly integrated into the cabinet profile runner on drawer box systems.
- Soft-close: Gentle, silent closing is achieved through drawer runners with soft-close damping. A hydraulic damper absorbs the force and pulls the drawer shut over the final centimetres.
- Handleless opening: For smooth furniture fronts without handles, push-to-open drawer runners are used. A mechanical ejector pushes the drawer open after a light tap on the front. Soft-close damping and push-to-open are technically opposing mechanisms that are not identical.
Use & selection
When planning a cabinet, the choice of system depends on the available internal space and the intended application. The clear internal cabinet depth must be at least the nominal length of the runner plus a 3 mm - 5 mm tolerance. For internal organisation of the completed drawer, precisely fitting drawer inserts such as cutlery trays or non-slip mats are placed inside.
