Load Capacity of Drawer Runners: Dynamic vs Static Load
The load capacity of drawer runners describes the maximum weight that a slide can safely support. A distinction is made between the static load at rest and the dynamic load during movement. When designing furniture, the lower dynamic value is always decisive, as it reflects the actual forces at play during opening and closing.
What do dynamic and static load capacity mean exactly?
When constructing drawers, various physical forces act upon the fittings. Manufacturers' specifications for load capacity therefore distinguish between two states:
- Static load capacity: This value indicates the weight the runner can withstand when fully closed without permanent deformation. The force acts vertically downwards, and the load is distributed evenly across the cabinet carcass.
- Dynamic load capacity: This is the crucial value for installation. It defines the maximum load while the drawer is in motion. Similar to a torque wrench, the forces acting on the bearings multiply the further the centre of gravity moves outwards. Particularly with full extension drawer runners, immense leverage forces act on the rear runner section and the fixing screws when fully opened.
Determining load limits
Dynamic load capacity is determined through testing procedures in accordance with standard DIN or EN norms. During these tests, the fully loaded drawer is mechanically opened and closed, typically over 50,000 to 100,000 cycles.
A critical factor in planning is the tare weight of the drawer. The specified load capacity in kilograms always refers to the combined weight of the wooden drawer box itself and its contents (payload).
Furthermore, load capacity depends on runner length. A short runner, such as 250 mm drawer runners, has a different leverage ratio compared to extremely long variants like 800 mm drawer runners. For extra-long lengths, the maximum weight rating for the same runner type is often reduced due to the increased risk of profile twisting.
Load capacity across different runner types
Maximum load limits vary considerably depending on the design and runner type:
- Roller runners: Simple roller drawer runners with plastic wheels are designed for light loads. The dynamic load capacity here usually ranges between 20 kg and 25 kg.
- Ball bearing runners: Telescopic runners with steel ball bearings offer significantly higher stability. Standard versions cover the range from 30 kg to 45 kg.
- Heavy-duty runners: Solid ball or roller bearing slides are used for workshop trolleys or large pantry units. Heavy duty drawer runners start at a load capacity of around 90 kg and can support up to 250 kg. They are essential when deep pull-outs, such as 700 mm drawer runners, are loaded with heavy items.
Practical selection and calculation
Exceeding the dynamic load capacity results in increased wear on the ball bearings or jamming of the profiles. Overloading is especially critical for runners with integrated features.
Mechanisms such as soft-close drawer runners require a precisely balanced weight so that the pneumatic or hydraulic damper can absorb the momentum of the drawer. If the drawer is too heavy, it will slam shut despite the damper. The exact opposite applies to push to open drawer runners (tip-on): here, the integrated spring must be strong enough to push the total weight of the drawer forward once released. If overloaded, the ejection mechanism will no longer open reliably.
Calculation example: An empty drawer made of 16 mm thick melamine-faced chipboard weighs 8 kg. If 25 kg of tools are to be stored inside, the total load is 33 kg. It is essential to select a runner with a dynamic load capacity of at least 35 kg or 45 kg.
