Installing a new kitchen or refurbishing existing units involves far more than simply positioning carcases against a wall. The strength, longevity, and everyday functionality of any cabinetry rely entirely on the components holding everything together. Carcase Assembly and Carcase Joining Fixings

Rigid cabinet assembly is the foundation of any reliable kitchen. While flat-pack units often come with basic dowels, professional installations typically require heavy-duty fixings to secure multiple units together into a continuous run.

  • Connecting bolts and sleeve nuts: Usually M4 or M6 threaded steel fittings used to draw adjacent carcases tight together through pre-drilled 5 mm or 8 mm holes.
  • Confirmat screws: Coarse-threaded, heavy-duty screws designed specifically for particleboard and MDF, offering significantly higher pull-out resistance than standard wood screws.
  • Angle brackets and corner braces: Useful for internal bracing and securing worktop rails to unit sides.

Cabinet Hinges and Mounting Plates

Cabinet doors take the brunt of daily wear and tear. Selecting the correct cabinet hinges ensures doors hang straight, close smoothly, and remain aligned over years of use.

The industry standard for modern cabinetry is the 35 mm concealed cup hinge. When calculating your hardware requirements, consider the following:

  • Opening angle: Standard installations use 110-degree hinges, but corner units, pantry units, or cabinets with internal drawers often require wide-angle hinges (up to 165 or 170 degrees) to allow unobstructed access.

Drawer Runners and Box Systems

Kitchen drawers carry considerable weight, from heavy cast-iron cookware to stacks of ceramic plates. Replacing worn runners or choosing the right hardware for new builds is crucial for smooth operation.

These clips snap directly onto the legs, holding the plinth firmly in place while allowing easy removal for plumbing or electrical maintenance beneath the cabinets.

Wall units must be mounted securely to withstand heavy loads of crockery and glassware. Modern installations rely on adjustable hanging brackets rather than simple screw fixings.

Internal concealed brackets hook onto a metal suspension rail fixed to the masonry or timber studs. Two adjustment screws inside the cabinet allow you to tweak the height and depth of the unit independently, ensuring the top units sit perfectly flush against the wall and align precisely with adjacent cabinets.

Task Lighting and Finishing Hardware

The final phase of cabinet fitting involves functional finishing touches. Under-cabinet LED lighting provides essential task illumination over worktops. Surface-mounted aluminium profiles or slimline puck lights can be neatly wired through pre-drilled cabinet panels, with cable grommets used to tidy wire routes through shelves and carcase backs.
