A furniture buffer or elastic bumper is a small, cushioning component made of plastic, silicone or polyurethane that softens the impact of furniture doors, drawers or flaps. These mostly self-adhesive buffers reduce noise when closing, protect surfaces against scratches and act as anti-slip pads for resting elements such as glass tops.
What exactly are furniture buffers and elastic bumpers?
An elastic bumper functions like a miniature shock absorber for furniture construction. When a cabinet door hits the carcase, the elastic material absorbs the kinetic energy and converts it into minimal thermal energy. This reliably prevents hard contact between wood, metal or glass.
In technical terms, this fitting is often referred to as a stop damper. Most variants are equipped with a strong acrylic adhesive on one side, allowing quick installation without drilling. The base materials consist mainly of polyurethane (PUR) or silicone. These materials are characterised by high resilience, do not harden over the years and leave no discolouration on the furniture finish.

If the buffers are used as spacers for heavy glass plates, larger diameters (from 10 mm) are required to minimise surface pressure and distribute the weight evenly.
Uses and areas of application
The classic area of application is the inside of furniture doors and drawer fronts. Here, the bumper is stuck onto the edge of the carcase to cushion the impact of the wood. If no mechanical door dampers are integrated into the hinge, the elastic bumper is the most efficient method for noise reduction on existing cabinets.
