The opening angle of a furniture hinge indicates the maximum extent to which a cabinet door can swing open, measured from the closed position at 0° to the mechanical stop. Standard concealed cup hinges typically open up to 110°, whereas wide-angle hinges for internal drawers or corner cabinets reach an opening angle of 155° to 165°.

What exactly is the opening angle?

The opening angle defines the maximum range of movement of the door leaf around the pivot point of the hinge. When constructing cabinet carcasses, this value is crucial for interior accessibility. A classic concealed cup hinge consists of the cup, which is recessed into the door leaf, and the hinge arm, which is mounted onto the carcass side.

You can imagine the mechanism of this hinge arm like a human knee: depending on the design of the levers and pivot pins, the maximum bending angle is fixed at the factory. Once the defined angle is reached, the mechanism blocks any further opening movement to prevent screws from pulling out.

Typical opening angles and their variations

Depending on the intended application and cabinet geometry, different angles are used:

90° to 95°: These fittings are often used in special constructions such as blind corners. A 90-degree hinge is sufficient for simple doors where full access across the entire internal cabinet width is not required.
110°: The absolute industry standard for ordinary cabinet doors. A 110-degree hinge allows convenient access without the open door protruding too far into the room or colliding with neighbouring pieces of furniture.
135°: Specifically designed for bi-fold doors or corner cabinets with unique geometries. A 135-degree hinge usually connects two door leaves together.
155° to 165°: Fitters refer to these as wide-angle hinges. A 165-degree hinge or a 155-degree hinge swings the door completely out of the clear carcass opening. At maximum opening, the door leaf sits almost parallel to the adjacent cabinet side.

Dimensions, standards, and technical dependencies

The opening angle is closely linked to the chosen door overlay type, as the door's position relative to the carcass affects the swing range. For correct operation, the cup drilling diameter (typically 35 mm) and the cup distance from the door edge (often 3 mm - 6 mm) must be calculated precisely.

With a full overlay (surface-mounted door), the door leaf sits in front of the carcass side walls when closed.
With a half overlay (twin door application), two doors share a single central divider wall.
With an inset door, the door closes flush inside the carcass opening.

Furthermore, modern fittings frequently feature integrated damping. Concealed cup hinges with soft-close hydraulically slow down the closing motion over the last few centimetres. This feature functions independently of the maximum opening angle and technically must not be confused with push-to-open mechanisms.

Application and selecting the correct angle

The choice of angle depends significantly on the room layout and internal cabinet fittings. If a cabinet sits directly against a wall, a 165° hinge will inevitably cause collisions with the masonry. In this case, a 110° hinge fitted with an optional opening angle restrictor (a small plastic clip inserted into the joint that reduces the angle to, for example, 86°) is the technically correct solution.

If, on the other hand, full-extension runners or internal drawers are planned inside the cabinet, the door must swing entirely out of the runner path. If the door still projects into the clear opening width at 110°, the drawers would scrape against the door when pulled out. In this scenario, the joiner must use a wide-angle hinge.
