How to Build Cupboards: Essential Hardware & Steps

Constructing custom cabinetry allows you to make the most of awkward alcoves, unutilised corners, and bespoke room layouts. Learning how to build cupboards is a core joinery skill that relies just as much on selecting the correct fittings as it does on accurate timber cutting. By understanding the structural role of modern hardware, you can produce sturdy, square, and professional-looking storage units tailored to any space in your home.

1. Planning Dimensions and Carcase Materials

Every reliable cupboard starts with a solid carcase (the main box). Standard British cabinetry typically uses 18 mm furniture-grade plywood or melamine-faced chipboard (MFC) for the side panels, top, bottom, and internal shelves. A thinner 6 mm or 9 mm board generally suffices for the back panel.

  • Measure the space: Account for out-of-square walls and uneven floors by factoring in a small scribe margin around the perimeter.
  • Calculate internal clearance: Remember that an 18 mm carcase will reduce the internal width by 36 mm compared to external measurements.
  • Door overlays: Decide whether your doors will be full overlay, half overlay, or inset, as this determines your carcase dimensions and hinge choice.

2. Joining the Carcase with Modern Connectors

When mastering how to build cupboards, traditional joinery like mortise and tenons is rarely required. Modern cabinet fixings offer robust, hidden connections that are straightforward to install.

  • Cam and dowel fittings: The industry standard for flat-pack stability. Cam locks pull the panels together tightly while wooden dowels provide shear strength.
  • Confirmat screws: Thick-shanked, heavy-duty screws designed specifically for chipboard and MDF. They require a stepped drill bit to create a clean, countersunk pilot hole.
  • Corner brackets: Reinforced metal or plastic brackets provide additional internal rigidity, particularly on deep or tall utility cupboards.

3. Installing Adjustable Shelving

Fixed shelves add structural rigidity, but adjustable shelves offer long-term flexibility. Drilling system holes enables you to change internal layouts as your storage needs evolve.

Using standard 32 mm system spacing, drill parallel columns of 5 mm holes along the inside faces of your side panels. Quality shelf supports—available as push-in steel pins, plastic-sleeved studs, or screw-in studs—slot directly into these holes to hold the shelves securely without visible screws.

4. Hanging the Doors with Concealed Hinges

The standard choice for modern cupboard doors is the European-style concealed hinge (cup hinge). These hinges are hidden when the door is shut and offer simple three-way adjustment to align door gaps perfectly.

  1. Bore the hinge cup: Using a 35 mm Forstner bit, drill circular recesses into the back of the door, typically 21.5 mm to 22.5 mm from the edge to the centre of the hole.
  2. Attach the mounting plates: Secure the hinge mounting plates to the carcase interior, ensuring they align accurately with the door recesses.
  3. Clip and adjust: Clip the hinge arms onto the plates. Use the adjustment screws to fine-tune the door height, depth, and side-to-side alignment until you achieve uniform 2 mm to 3 mm gaps around the door.

5. Adding Finishing Touches: Handles and Base Levelling

Once the carcases and doors are assembled, the final step in learning how to build cupboards is fitting the external hardware.
