How to Fit Replacement Cabinet Doors and Hinges

Upgrading a kitchen, utility room, or wardrobe unit by fitting replacement cabinet doors is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh tired joinery. If your cabinet carcasses are sturdy and level, there is no need to rip out the entire layout. However, a successful cabinet door replacement relies entirely on precise measurements, correct hinge selection, and proper alignment techniques.

1. Measuring Up and Checking Hinge Hole Positions

Before purchasing replacement cabinet doors, you must assess whether your new doors will arrive pre-drilled or undrilled. Most modern concealed hinges require a standard 35 mm diameter cup hole drilled into the rear face of the door.

  • Hinge Hole Centres: Measure the distance from the top and bottom edges of the original door to the centre of each hinge cup hole. Standard distances are often between 100 mm and 120 mm, but variations exist.
  • Bore Depth and Edge Distance: Ensure the hinge cup depth (typically 11.5 mm to 12.5 mm) suits your door thickness. The edge distance (tab size) between the outer door edge and the cup rim is usually between 3 mm and 5 mm.
  • Carcass Mounting Points: Check whether your carcass uses standard 32 mm system mounting holes (37 mm back from the front edge) or if you will need to drill fresh pilot holes for the mounting plates.

2. Selecting the Correct Concealed Hinges and Mounting Plates

Concealed Euro-style hinges are engineered for specific door overlay types. Choosing the right hinge profile prevents doors from clashing or failing to close flush against the carcass frame:

  • Full Overlay: The door sits completely over the carcass side wall, leaving only a tiny reveal. This is the most common setup for standalone or end-run units.
  • Half Overlay: Used on shared central division panels where two doors hinge off a single 18 mm partition wall.
  • Inset (Embedded): The door sits entirely inside the carcass opening, flush with the front face of the side panels.
  • Mounting Plates: Select clip-on mounting plates for easier installation and maintenance, preferably with cam-action vertical adjustment screws to make levelling straightforward.

3. Drilling and Fitting the Hinges

If your doors require drilling on-site, use a sharp 35 mm Forstner bit fitted to a pillar drill or a reliable drilling jig to avoid punching through the decorative front face.

  1. Mark the exact centre point for the hinge cup based on your planned edge offset and height measurements.
  2. Drill to the required depth, periodically clearing wood chips to keep the bottom flat and clean.
  3. Insert the hinge cup into the hole. Use a straight edge laid across the hinges to ensure they sit perfectly square to the door edge before driving in the fixing screws.

4. Hanging the Doors and 3-Way Hinge Adjustment

Secure the mounting plates to the carcass side walls, ensuring they match the height of your hinge arms. Clip or screw the hinge arms into the plates, starting with the top hinge to support the door's weight.

Once hung, use the three built-in adjustment screws on each hinge arm to eliminate uneven gaps:

  • Lateral (Side-to-Side) Adjustment: Turn the front screw to shift the door left or right, maintaining an even 2 mm to 3 mm reveal between adjoining fronts.
  • Vertical (Height) Adjustment: Loosen the mounting plate screws or turn the central cam to lift or lower the door so all front panels sit level across the run.
  • Depth (In-and-Out) Adjustment: Use the rear screw to move the door closer to or further from the carcass face, ensuring smooth closure without catching the frame.

5. Finishing with Handles and Fixings

Complete your project by attaching new handles or knobs. Always measure twice and use a drilling guide to keep pull positions uniform across all doors. For a clean finish on the interior, place screw-head cover caps over exposed fixings, and fit soft-close buffers or dampening pads on corner edges to cushion closing contact.
