How to Make Cupboards: Essential Hardware & Assembly Guide

Building your own bespoke storage allows you to maximise every square centimetre of an alcove, kitchen, or utility room. While cutting sheet materials like MFC, MDF, or plywood to size is straightforward, understanding how to make cupboards that are structurally sound and function smoothly relies almost entirely on choosing and installing the correct hardware. This guide details the essential fittings you need to transform timber panels into professional-quality cabinetry.

1. Assembling the Carcass: Fixings and Connectors

The carcass (or cabinet box) is the structural foundation of your cupboard. To ensure your unit stays square and withstands daily loading, you must select the appropriate jointing hardware.

  • Confirmat Screws: These heavy-duty steel screws feature a stepped shank and deep threads designed specifically for chipboard and MDF. They provide massive pull-out resistance when used with a dedicated stepped drill bit.
  • Cam and Dowel Fittings (Minifix): Ideal if you want clean, screw-free exterior sides. The steel dowel screws into one panel while the cam lock pulls the mating panel tight from the inside.
  • Carcass Connecting Bolts: When joining multiple cupboard carcasses side by side in a run, male-and-female binding bolts (typically M4 or M6) clamp the adjacent 18 mm side panels tightly together without protruding heads.
  • Corner Brackets: Small metal angle plates or plastic KD blocks can be used internally for supplementary bracing or to secure top stretchers.

2. Mounting Doors with Concealed Hinges

Once your box is assembled, hanging the doors is the next critical step. Concealed European-style hinges (often called cup hinges) offer clean lines and complete three-way adjustability.

Selecting the Right Overlay

Ensure you know your cabinet layout before buying hinges:

  • Full Overlay: The door sits directly over the front edge of the carcass, concealing the full thickness of the cabinet side (common on standalone units).
  • Half Overlay: Two doors share a single central carcass divider, each covering half the panel edge.
  • Inset: The door sits completely flush inside the carcass frame, requiring a specific cranked hinge arm and baseplate.

Standard concealed hinges require a 35 mm diameter hole drilled into the back of the door, typically with a depth of 11.5 mm to 12.5 mm and an offset of 3 mm to 5 mm from the door edge. Mounting plates attach to the inside carcass wall, usually 37 mm back from the front edge following the standard 32 mm system.

3. Fitting Adjustable Shelving

Fixed shelves add rigidity, but adjustable internal shelving ensures long-term versatility. To achieve this, drill a series of vertical holes (commonly 5 mm diameter) spaced 32 mm apart on both internal sides of the cabinet.

  • Spoon/Stud Shelf Pins: Simple steel or brass pins that push directly into 5 mm holes.
  • Shelf Supports with Grips: Plastic-lined or rubber-buffered pins that stop glass or lightweight timber shelves from sliding forward.
  • Sleeve Bushings: Metal inserts that line the drilled holes, preventing wear and tear in softer MFC or MDF boards over time.

4. Installing Drawer Runners

If your cupboard design includes integrated internal or external drawers, selecting the right runners determines both weight capacity and action.

  • Ball-Bearing Runners: Mounted to the drawer sides, these robust steel runners offer smooth travel and are available in full-extension or 3/4-extension formats.
  • Under-Mount Concealed Runners: Fitted underneath the drawer box, hiding all metal mechanisms for a premium look.
  • Soft-Close vs. Push-to-Open: Soft-close runners prevent slamming, whereas push-to-open mechanisms eliminate the need for external handles on modern, minimalist designs.

Always ensure your drawer box is sized correctly according to the runner manufacturer's clearance requirements (typically 12.7 mm per side for standard side-mounted ball-bearing slides).

5. Levelling and Handles

To finish your cupboard, fit adjustable cabinet legs to the base of the carcass. These allow you to level the unit on uneven floors before clipping a decorative plinth into place. Finally, add your choice of handles or bar pulls using M4 machine screws cut to the correct door thickness.
