Building your own cabinetry is one of the most rewarding DIY projects you can undertake, offering complete control over dimensions, layout, and finish. However, knowing how to make kitchen cupboards that endure years of daily use requires more than just cutting timber panels accurately. The true strength, alignment, and longevity of any cabinet depend directly on the structural hardware and fittings you choose. 1. Carcass Assembly and Structural Fixings
Standard kitchen base and wall cabinets are typically constructed from 18 mm MFC (melamine-faced chipboard) or birch plywood. To join the base, top, and side gables into a solid box, several jointing methods can be used depending on your tooling and skill level:
- Cam and Dowel Connectors: The trade standard for flat-pack and custom cabinetry. Knock-down cam lock fittings allow for hidden, exceptionally tight joints that can be disassembled if needed. They require precise drilling using standard 32 mm system spacing.

2. Mounting and Levelling Hardware
Once the carcass is built, ensuring it is level and safely attached to the wall structure is critical for proper door alignment and worktop support.
Adjustable Cabinet Legs
Never sit base cabinet timber directly on a kitchen floor. Heavy-duty plastic adjustable legs (usually 100 mm or 150 mm) support the unit above any potential moisture and allow you to compensate for uneven floors. These legs feature plinth clips that snap directly onto matching kickboards for a neat finish.
Wall Hanging Brackets
