The dynamic load capacity of a heavy-duty drawer runner indicates the maximum weight the runner can safely carry whilst in motion (during opening and closing). The static load capacity, by contrast, defines the load limit in a closed, stationary state. For secure installation, the dynamic value must always be used as the upper benchmark.
What Do Dynamic and Static Loads Mean Exactly?
When designing furniture and industrial drawer units, distinguishing between load types is essential. When a drawer is pulled out, the centre of gravity of the contents shifts forwards. As with a cantilever arm in structural engineering, this multiplies the leverage forces acting on the guide rail, the ball cage, and the fixing screws.
The dynamic load capacity is typically determined through testing procedures in which the runner is opened and closed under nominal load over tens of thousands of cycles. This ensures that the ball bearing runner does not deform or seize under movement. The static load capacity is naturally higher, as kinetic forces and leverage effects along the travel path do not occur when at rest. Exceeding the dynamic load capacity leads to increased wear, sagging of the rail, or, in the worst case, the fixings being torn out.
Factors Influencing Load Capacity
The actual load-bearing capacity in practical applications depends on several factors that must be considered during planning:
- Runner length: The longer the runner, the greater the leverage arm when fully extended. A heavy-duty drawer runners profile with a length of 1200 mm undergoes significantly higher torsional stress at the front edge than compact drawer runners 300 mm.
- Drawer width: Wide drawers tend to twist or jam when loaded unevenly. Most manufacturer specifications relate to a maximum drawer width of 450 mm to 600 mm.
- Fixing hardware: The runner is only as strong as its anchoring in the cabinet carcass. For heavy loads, through-bolts or Euro screws are strictly required; simple chipboard screws with a 3 mm diameter are insufficient here.

When a full extension runner is chosen, the drawer can be pulled out to 100 % of its nominal length. This is particularly important with heavy loads to allow ergonomic access to contents from above.
