What is MDF Board? Properties, Benefits & Use in Furniture Making
An MDF board (Medium-Density Fibreboard) is a standardised engineered wood product pressed from extremely fine, glued wood fibres under high pressure and heat to create a homogenous material. It features a density of 600 to 900 kg/m³ and is distinguished by smooth surfaces and solid edges, making it ideal for profiling, painting, and furniture construction.
What Exactly is an MDF Board?
The Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF for short) differs fundamentally from classic chipboard. While chipboard is made by compressing coarse wood chips, MDF consists of mechanically defibrated softwood. The structure of an MDF board resembles a solid, extremely tightly compressed block of paper with no individual chips visible. This homogenous composition ensures smooth cut edges that can be milled, profiled, and painted directly without the need for edge banding.
Types and Variants
Depending on the requirements in furniture making and interior fittings, different board variants are used:
- Raw MDF: Untreated core board, ideal for bespoke painting after applying a suitable primer.
- Primed MDF: Coated at the factory with a fine paper foil that allows direct painting without time-consuming filling and sanding.
- Melamine-Faced MDF: Finished with a hard-wearing decorative layer, frequently used for premium furniture carcasses or front panels.
- Moisture-Resistant MDF: Usually dyed green and specially bonded for higher swelling resistance, engineered for use in bathrooms.
Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values
In the workshop and during installation, MDF is processed in various standard thicknesses and density grades.
- Board thicknesses: Typical dimensions for furniture back panels range from 3 mm to 5 mm. For carcasses and fronts, 16 mm or 19 mm is most commonly used. Solid versions for desk tops or worktops reach 25 mm to 38 mm.
- Density: Standard MDF boards have a bulk density of around 700 kg/m³.
- Drill holes: Due to the absence of coarse chips, the material is perfectly suited for precise hole series according to the System 32 grid, such as for shelf supports or installing concealed hinges.
Use and Processing in Furniture Construction
MDF can be cut, milled, and drilled accurately using carbide-tipped tools. Due to the high density, screwing into the edges strictly requires pre-drilling; otherwise, the material will split. For attaching fittings, classic wood screws and furniture screws are used, utilising drive types such as wood screws PZ2 depending on the screw head size.
If multiple panels are to be joined securely, for instance when assembling a desk, installers rely on furniture connectors or, for thicker material gauges, worktop connectors.
MDF also demonstrates its strengths when fitting add-on components. The dense surface provides optimal hold for drill holes for furniture legs without screws tearing out. On painted fronts, modern furniture handles can be positioned accurately because the drill bit does not wander in the homogenous material.
In finished furniture pieces, such as modern wooden media wall units, MDF often serves as the substrate for painted or foiled high-gloss and matt fronts. Visible screw heads inside the carcass can be concealed flush after assembly using self-adhesive screw cover caps wood effect.
