Melamine Coating in Furniture: Properties, Care & Advantages
Melamine coating is a resilient surface finish for engineered wood materials, created by pressing decorative paper soaked in melamine resin onto substrate boards under heat and pressure. It makes furniture scratch-resistant, liquid-repellent, and easy to maintain, which is why it is used as standard in the manufacture of cabinet carcasses and fronts.
What Exactly Is a Melamine Coating?
In professional cabinet making, coating with melamine resin is the technical standard for sheet materials. This synthetic resin belongs to the thermosetting plastic group. It cures completely under thermal influence and cannot be reshaped afterwards. The coating process takes place in large presses: a printed or dyed decorative paper is impregnated with the resin and pressed directly onto a substrate board. The heat-induced cross-linking of the resin creates a closed, non-porous surface. This coating acts like an invisible shield, protecting the soft wooden core from mechanical and chemical influences.
Structure, Dimensions, and Standards
The thickness of the pure melamine coating is usually in the range of 0.1 mm - 0.4 mm, depending on the number of paper layers (underlay, decorative paper, overlay). As a rule, chipboard or an MDF board (medium-density fibreboard) serves as the core substrate.
Typical board thicknesses in furniture construction that are processed with melamine coating on both sides are 16 mm, 19 mm, and 22 mm. When constructing carcasses, the hard outer layer must strictly be sealed at the cut edges, which is achieved by applying ABS edging or melamine edging with a thickness of 0.4 mm - 2.0 mm.
Processing and Assembly in the Workshop
The hardness of the melamine resin surface creates specific requirements for machining and the choice of fittings. When sawing and drilling, the material tends to chip if blunt tools or an incorrect feed rate are selected. Scoring saw blades are essential for clean edges.
When installing fittings, the smooth, hard surface demands precise workmanship. Screws cannot simply be forced into an un-pre-drilled coating, as the material will otherwise crack. For attaching hinges, drawer runners, or a furniture handle, special wood screws and furniture screws are used. These feature a sharp thread that bites into the softer core of the chipboard.
For carcass construction, 4mm wood screws have proven ideal. To transfer force optimally during driving and to prevent slipping on the smooth melamine surface, fitters frequently turn to screws with PZ2 wood screws drive (Pozidriv). Alternatively, classic furniture connectors such as cams or dowels are used for invisible construction.
Visible screw heads on the coated surface can be concealed after assembly. For this purpose, self-adhesive screw cover caps wood matching the respective decor (for example Sonoma oak or solid white) are placed over the screw head to ensure a visually seamless surface.
Care and Maintenance
Due to the non-porous structure, melamine coating is extremely hygienic. Dirt and liquids cannot penetrate into the substrate board as long as the edges remain undamaged. For cleaning, damp cloths and mild detergents are sufficient. Abrasive cleaning agents or scouring sponges destroy the sheen level and roughen the thermosetting plastic.
