Multiplex Plywood in Furniture Making: Properties, Stability & Processing
Multiplex plywood is a highly stable engineered wood product made of at least five cross-bonded veneer layers with a total thickness of at least 12 mm. Thanks to this symmetrical construction, the material provides outstanding dimensional stability and hardly warps, which is why it is used in professional furniture making for heavily stressed constructions.
What Exactly Is Multiplex Plywood?
In contrast to simple plywood, which often consists of only three plies, the definition of multiplex plywood starts at precisely five veneer layers. These layers are usually made of birch or beech and are pressed together at an angle of 90° under high pressure. Through this cross-lamination, the natural swelling and shrinkage movements of the wood counteract each other – a process known to tradespeople as balancing or locking the wood.
The result is a board with isotropic properties that hardly deforms under load or fluctuating indoor climates. The distinctive, striped edge appearance of the veneer layers is frequently left intentionally visible as a design feature in modern furniture, finished simply with oil or clear lacquer.
Types and Bonding Classes
The areas of application depend primarily on the type of adhesive used. The DIN EN 314 standard divides boards into different classes:
- Class 1 (Dry conditions): Urea-formaldehyde glue (UF), primarily suitable for interior spaces and classic cabinet making.
- Class 2 (Humid conditions): Melamine-urea-formaldehyde glue (MUF), resistant to occasional moisture, ideal for bathroom furniture or kitchen base units.
- Class 3 (Exterior conditions): Phenol-formaldehyde resin bonding (PF), often referred to in the trade as BFU 100. These panels are weather-resistant provided the exposed edges are properly sealed.
Additionally, boards are categorised by surface quality, typically using letter grades such as BB/BB (small pin knots permitted on both sides) or CP/CP (for non-visible structural areas).
Typical Dimensions and Standards
Standardised sheet sizes and thicknesses apply in the timber trade and for automated CNC machining.
- Board thicknesses: Common thicknesses for furniture construction start at 12 mm and extend across 15 mm, 18 mm, 21 mm, 24 mm up to 30 mm or 40 mm for heavy-duty workbench tops.
- Panel formats: Typical industrial sheet sizes are 2500 mm x 1250 mm or 3000 mm x 1500 mm.
- Tolerances: The thickness tolerance for calibrated boards according to DIN EN 315 is within ± 0.5 mm.
Processing and Construction in Furniture Making
When machining, this dense material demands sharp tungsten carbide tooling (TCT/HM) to prevent tear-out on the fine face veneers. For strong carcase joints, furniture connectors such as cam and pin fittings or biscuit joints are exceptionally well suited.
Because the end edges are extremely dense due to the alternating glue lines, driving in wood screws and furniture screws strictly requires pre-drilling. The drill bit diameter should correspond precisely to the core diameter of the screw. The cross-laminated structure acts like an internal support matrix, offering screw threads exceptional resistance against pull-out.
Suitable Fittings for Multiplex Furniture
Multiplex is often used for heavy-duty storage, workshop cabinetry, or minimalist designer sideboards. The high raw density (approx. 700 kg/m³ for birch) requires robust, hard-wearing fittings:
- Floor support: To compensate for uneven floors beneath heavy cabinets, adjustable furniture feet are the technically most reliable choice. For a modern industrial aesthetic, solid tubular steel furniture legs are often screwed directly into the base panel.
- Door design: Dimensional stability allows precise 35 mm cup holes to be routed directly into multiplex cabinet doors for concealed hinges. To operate the doors, depending on front weight, a sturdy furniture handle or a firmly secured furniture knob can be installed.
