Over-Extension on Heavy-Duty Drawer Runners: Definition & Extension Lengths
An over-extension on heavy-duty drawer runners is a mechanical telescopic slide mechanism whose extension travel is longer than the nominal length of the closed runner. The drawer can therefore be pulled out beyond the front edge of the cabinet carcass, allowing complete, unobstructed access to the entire interior space – ideal for deep pull-outs and heavy loads.
What exactly is an over-extension?
In furniture and vehicle construction, the nominal length (installation length) defines the space a closed runner occupies inside the cabinet carcass. While a classic full extension brings the drawer exactly 100% out of the carcass, an over-extension adds additional travel. Depending on the runner model, this extra projection is typically 20 mm - 50 mm.
Technically, this is achieved using multi-part profile sections. The runner functions like the telescopic boom of a crane, extending beyond its own anchor point to achieve maximum reach. For example, with a nominal length of 500 mm, the actual extension travel on an over-extension runner could be 530 mm. This places the rear wall of the drawer completely in front of the cabinet facade once opened. This is crucial when heavy items such as machinery components, batteries, or toolboxes need to be lifted straight upwards without catching on the cabinet frame.
Construction and extension lengths
Over-extension runners are generally based on a robust ball-bearing slide design. Multiple steel ball bearings housed in cages ensure smooth, low-friction movement, even under extreme load. The material thickness of the cold-rolled steel profiles is significantly higher in these models compared to standard fittings.
Selecting the right length depends on the depth of the cabinet carcass. The range covers a broad technical spectrum:
- For very restricted spaces, such as specialised machinery enclosures, short options like drawer runners 250 mm or drawer runners 300 mm are available.
- For compact tool cabinets or shallow vehicle fit-outs, drawer runners 400 mm are frequently used.
- In standard workshop applications, drawer runners 500 mm and drawer runners 600 mm are standard dimensions.

- Locking mechanism: Many heavy-duty runners feature a lock-in/lock-out function. A manual lever securely locks the runner in both the closed and fully extended positions to prevent accidental movement.
- Soft-close / damping: Whilst extremely heavy industrial pull-outs usually operate without self-closing mechanisms, drawer runners with soft-close can be found in the medium load range. The integrated soft-close system prevents the drawer from slamming hard against the carcass.
Application & selection
The decision to choose an over-extension in workshop planning is always made when access to the rearmost corner of the drawer must be completely unimpeded. If the primary requirement is simply full opening without extra projection, a regular full extension drawer runner is usually sufficient.

- Available internal depth in the cabinet carcass (determines the maximum nominal length).
- Weight of the empty drawer plus the maximum planned payload (determines the required load capacity).
