Over-Extension in Telescopic Runners: Definition & Technical Advantages
An over-extension runner is a specialised design of drawer slides where the extension length is greater than the nominal length or installation length of the slide. Whilst a standard full-extension slide opens the drawer to 100%, an over-extension runner typically travels a further 20 mm to 50 mm. This provides unobstructed access to the rearmost section of the drawer, even when an overhanging worktop obscures the view.
What Exactly Is an Over-Extension Runner?
In professional furniture construction and interior fitting, the extension travel defines the distance a drawer can be moved out of the cabinet. With an over-extension runner, this travel exceeds the physical measurement of the closed slide.
Technically, this is usually achieved via a three-piece or four-piece ball-bearing slide. Much like the extension of a multi-section telescopic aerial, the inner slide profiles extend beyond the actual front edge of the cabinet carcass. This construction requires high-precision ball-bearing cages, as leverage acts most heavily on the forward-most bearing points when fully extended.
Distinction from Other Runner Types
To categorise over-extension correctly, it is important to distinguish it from standard runner types:
- Partial extension: The drawer can only be opened to around 75%. The rear section remains inside the carcass.

- Dimensions: If you fit 500 mm drawer runners, for example, the total extension travel on an over-extension model is roughly 530 mm. For longer options such as 600 mm drawer runners, the overhang may scale accordingly.
- Installation width: Because over-extension slides often carry heavy loads under maximum leverage, they require robust profiles. The lateral installation gap (the clearance between the drawer side and the internal carcass wall) is often 12.7 mm on standard models and 19.1 mm on heavy-duty versions.
Mechanics and Additional Features
Over-extension runners are based almost exclusively on side-mounted telescopic slides with steel ball bearings. They can be combined with modern convenience features, though the mechanisms must be strictly distinguished:
- Damping: Soft-close drawer runners absorb the momentum when closing and pull the drawer softly and silently into the carcass over the final few centimetres.
- Opening support: Push-to-open drawer runners (tip-on) are the opposite mechanism. They mechanically pop the handleless drawer open when pressure is applied to the front.
Practical Application and Selection
Using an over-extension slide is technically advisable whenever vertical access to the rear drawer area is obstructed. Typical scenarios for the fitter include:
- Kitchen fitting: When worktops have a deep overhang (e.g. 40 mm - 50 mm over the front), a standard full-extension runner leaves the rear area shadowed beneath the worktop.
- Workshop fitting: For rapid access to tools stored in deep modules. Here, over-extension is often implemented as a heavy-duty runner. Heavy-duty drawer runners with over-extension offer load ratings of 45 kg, 90 kg, or even 130 kg.
- Office furniture: For suspension filing systems where the rearmost folder must be lifted vertically upwards to be removed.
Selection tip for installation: Check the available carcass depth beforehand. If the clear internal depth is exactly 460 mm, select 450 mm drawer runners. Furthermore, ensure there is sufficient clearance in the room in front of the furniture piece to accommodate the extended travel distance, avoiding collisions with facing walls or doors.
