A push-to-open mechanism is a spring-assisted release system for handleless furniture fronts. By applying light pressure to the surface, the mechanism unlatches and pushes doors, flaps, or drawers open by a defined gap. This allows them to be opened fully by hand and replaces traditional furniture handle solutions in modern furniture designs.

What exactly is the push-to-open mechanism?

The core of this system consists of a precisely matched combination of tension spring and catch mechanism. When the furniture front is closed, the spring remains under tension. If the front is pressed inwards by a few millimetres, the mechanical lock is released. The released spring force subsequently pushes the front outwards. Mechanically, this principle resembles the mechanism of a ballpoint pen: one press engages the system, and the next press releases the catch.

For the system to function smoothly, an exact gap dimension between the carcase and the front is strictly necessary. Without this physical clearance, the pressure point required for unlatching cannot be reached.

Types and variants of release systems

Depending on the piece of furniture and construction, different designs are used:

  • Integrated systems: The mechanical unit is built directly into the fitting. This is frequently the case with push to open drawer runners, where the spring and catch technology sits invisibly inside the runner profile. Special concealed hinges / cabinet hinges can also be equipped with an integrated opening spring.
  • Surface-mounted systems (touch latches): These cylindrical components are fitted separately into the carcase. They exist as a drill-in variant (countersunk flush into the wood) or as a screw-on variant with an adapter housing. Fastening is carried out using suitable wood screws and furniture screws.
  • Magnetic touch latches: A special version where the tip of the ejector is magnetic. A metal counter-plate is fitted to the inside of the cabinet door. The magnet ensures that the door stays positioned flush when closed and is not pushed open by the tension of the hinges.

Dimensions, standards, and typical values

For professional installation and adjustment by a joiner or fitter, the following technical specifications are decisive:

  • Release gap: The strictly required clearance between the front and the front edge of the carcase. This is usually 1.5 mm - 3.0 mm.
  • Ejection travel: The distance the front springs open after unlatching. Standard values range between 20 mm - 45 mm, depending on the spring strength.
  • Drill diameter: For drill-in touch latches, a drill hole with a diameter of 10 mm is usually required.
  • Depth adjustment: High-quality fittings allow manual adjustment of the release gap by rotating the ejector pin, typically in the range of +4 mm to -1 mm.

Use & selection in furniture construction

When planning handleless fronts, the ecosystem of fittings must be precisely coordinated. A critical aspect is the choice of hinges for standard doors. A traditional hinge with a self-closing mechanism actively works against the ejection force of the push-to-open system with its spring pressure. Therefore, unsprung hinges (without spring) or hinges with a reverse spring are used for this application. A common setup, for example, is combining a touch latch with special concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 110 degrees without a self-closing mechanism.

Similarly, a strict distinction must be made regarding soft-close technology. A standard door damper or standard drawer runners with soft-close pull the front shut gently and automatically over the final millimetres. However, a push-to-open mechanism requires manual pressure and momentum from the user to re-tension the ejection spring for the next cycle. Soft-close and push-to-open are physically opposing mechanisms and are mutually exclusive in their pure forms.

For wide drawers (from approx. 600 mm width), the use of a synchronisation rod is also recommended. This rod connects the left and right drawer runners. It ensures that the mechanism triggers reliably on both sides without jamming, even if the user presses only an outer corner of the front.
