Push-to-Open (Tip-On): Definition & Function of Handleless Furniture Systems
Push-to-open (also known as tip-on) is a mechanical release mechanism for handleless furniture fronts. Applying light pressure to the front releases a pre-tensioned spring, opening drawers, cupboard doors, or flaps by a defined gap so they can be fully pulled open by hand.
What Exactly Is Push-to-Open and How Does It Work?
The mechanism is typically based on a slotted guide track with an integrated spring – similar to the mechanics inside a standard ballpoint pen. When closed, the front presses the system's plunger into a latch. Pressing the front again briefly overcomes the dead point, releasing the latch so the spring force pushes the door or drawer open.
Technically, a strict distinction must be made between push-to-open and soft-close. Whilst push-to-open creates an ejection force to open the front, a door damper slows down the closing movement. These are opposing physical actions. However, modern premium runners combine both systems into a single component: the drawer opens upon pressure and closes with gentle damping across the final centimetres.
Types and Variations of the Mechanism
Depending on the furniture piece, different designs are used:
- Touch latches (also known as push catches, buffers, or magnetic catches): Individual cylinders that are either drilled directly into the cabinet carcass side or surface-mounted using an adapter plate. They are used for hinged doors in combination with concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges.
- Integrated systems for drawer runners: Here, the mechanism is built directly into the runner. Push-to-open drawer runners release the carriage internally without requiring an extra component on the cabinet carcass.

- Ejection distance: Depending on the spring tension, the system pushes the front open by 20 mm - 40 mm.
- Drilling dimensions: Drill-in push catches usually require a hole with a diameter of 10 mm and a depth of 50 mm - 70 mm.
- Load capacity: The weight must be considered for drawers. Standard ball bearing slides with push-to-open functionality accommodate load capacities of 25 kg - 45 kg across typical nominal lengths of 250 mm - 600 mm.
Application and Installation Selection
Using push-to-open fittings enables minimalist, sleek furniture designs, completely eliminating the need for a traditional furniture handle. When planning cabinet doors, the choice of hinges is crucial. If a touch latch is used, hinges without an automatic closing mechanism (unsprung) or with a reverse spring must be installed. Using standard hinges, such as classic concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges 110 degrees with a spring, causes the closing force of the hinge to work constantly against the push catch. This blocks proper operation or leads to premature wear of the catch.
Most systems feature integrated depth adjustment. Turning the plunger allows the gap clearance to be adjusted precisely (often within a range of +4 mm / -1 mm) to ensure a uniform gap pattern across handleless fronts.
