How to Remove Plinth Legs: Safely Lifting Kitchen Cabinets and Detaching Old Fixing Clips from the Carcase

Step-by-Step Guide: Removing Plinth Legs and Clips

The construction of an adjustable furniture leg generally consists of three components: the mounting plate (the block screwed to the cabinet), the actual cylindrical leg tube, and the fixing clip that holds the front plinth panel. Proceed systematically during dismantling.

Step 1: Pulling off the Plinth Panel

The front plinth panel conceals the mechanism. Grip the panel at one end along the bottom edge and pull it forward with a firm, controlled tug. The plastic clips screwed to the rear of the panel will release from the cylindrical cabinet leg with an audible snap. Set the panel aside.

Step 2: Removing Fixing Clips from the Plinth

If you are replacing the leg system entirely, the old clips must also be removed. Lay the plinth panel flat on the floor. The clips are usually secured into the engineered wood with short wood screws (e.g. 3.5 mm x 15 mm). Back these out using the cordless screwdriver. Some systems also use clips slotted into a routed groove; these can simply be pushed out sideways.

Step 3: Lifting and Securing the Kitchen Cabinet

To remove the plinth leg, the load on it must be relieved. If the cabinet is freestanding (all fixings undone), tilt it carefully backwards so the front legs hang in the air. If the unit remains partly integrated (e.g. under a heavy worktop that can only be lifted slightly), use fitting wedges. Drive the wedges under the bottom panel of the carcase, directly beside the mounting plate. Raise the cabinet by 5 mm to 10 mm in this manner. The cylindrical leg is attached to the mounting plate on the bottom panel. There are two common systems here:

  • Threaded system: The leg is screwed into the plate via a coarse thread. Turn the leg anticlockwise to unscrew it.

Step 5: Unscrewing the Mounting Plate from the Carcase

The final step is removing the mounting plate (often called the leg boss). Lie beneath the cabinet or tilt it onto its back panel. The plate is usually secured to the bottom panel with four chipboard screws (often 4 mm x 17 mm). Sometimes there is an additional thick expanding dowel in the centre (e.g. 10 mm or 15 mm diameter) that fits into a pre-drilled blind hole. Loosen all screws. If the plate remains firmly seated, pull it with pliers or prise it off. Take care not to scratch the coating on the bottom panel. The carcase is now ready to receive new Adjustable Plinth Legs.

Avoiding Common Dismantling Mistakes

Even with a seemingly simple component like a furniture leg, mistakes can cause irreparable damage to the unit.

Tilting cabinets under load: A heavy, loaded cabinet tilted over its rear legs generates immense leverage. The rear mounting plates can tear out of the bottom panel. The screws will pull out the core material, leaving cratered tear-outs. New legs will find no purchase at these locations. Always empty the cabinet completely first.

Incorrect screwdriver bit: The screws under the cabinet are often awkward to reach and dirty. Using the wrong bit (e.g. PH instead of PZ) will strip the screw head. A rounded screw head sitting flush with the bottom panel can only be extracted with significant effort (e.g. by drilling it out or using a screw extractor).

Forcibly ripping off clips: If the plinth panel does not pull away in Step 1, do not use brute force. In some older systems, the clips are not simply clamped on; they feature a small locking slider. Shine a torch underneath the cabinet and check if the clip needs to be mechanically unlocked.

Can I replace a damaged leg without dismantling the whole kitchen run? Yes, this is possible. Remove the plinth panel and drive a sturdy wedge between the floor and the cabinet base directly next to the defective leg. Once the leg hangs 2 mm to 3 mm clear of the floor, you can (depending on the system) pull it downwards or wind the thread fully in to shorten it and remove it.

Are the screw hole patterns for mounting plates standardised? No. While many manufacturers use a grid based on the System 32 spacing, the exact distances between the four screw holes on the mounting plate vary significantly between brands. When replacing legs entirely, you will generally need to mark or pre-drill new holes (using a 2.5 mm or 3 mm wood drill bit).

What should I do if the screw holes in the bottom panel are torn out? If the old screws have stripped the wood, new screws will no longer hold there. Simply offset the new mounting plate by 10 mm to 20 mm towards the rear or side. The exact position of the leg is not strictly specified to the millimetre, provided it transfers the load vertically.

What screw length is safe for mounting plates? The bottom panel of a kitchen cabinet is usually 16 mm or 19 mm thick. Use screws with a maximum length of 15 mm or 17 mm (e.g. 4 mm x 15 mm). Longer screws will pierce through the panel and damage the interior of the cabinet.
