Repairing Swollen Chipboard and Melamine Edging: How to Fix Water Damage on Furniture
Swollen chipboard occurs when moisture penetrates unsealed wood fibres, causing an increase in volume and structural failure of the core material.

Step-by-Step Repair Guide
Swollen timber material behaves like a wet sponge in a freezer: its internal structure bursts apart due to expansion, and once dry, it cannot simply be forced back into shape using mechanical pressure. The destroyed material must be excised and replaced.
1. Assessment and Disassembly
Where possible, detach the affected panel from the rest of the cabinet carcass. Remove all adjacent hardware. If moisture has reached the line of holes for furniture connectors, mark these positions accurately before removing damaged material. Ensure the component is completely dry (moisture content below 12 %) before proceeding.
2. Removing Swollen Material
Trim the loose edging flush back to the undamaged section using a utility knife or chisel. Scrape out the soft, swollen core fibres from inside the board completely. This creates a wedge-shaped recess between the intact outer melamine layers. Take care not to scratch or chip the sound surface coating.
3. Binding and Stabilising Fibres
If the inner edges of the recess are crumbly, apply a thin coat of PU adhesive inside the cavity. This reacts with ambient humidity, expands slightly, and binds loose wood particles. Once cured (approx. 2 hours), slice away the foamed excess flush with the surface.
4. Filling and Building up Material
The missing core is now reconstructed.
- Clamp a straight backer block (a piece of coated board) flush to the underside of the damaged edge using G-clamps. Cover the contact surface of the block with smooth parcel tape first so the resin will not adhere to the timber.
- Mix the two-component filler strictly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Press the filler firmly into the recesses using a spatula. Work quickly, as pot life is often just 5 - 10 minutes.
- Apply the filler slightly proud of the surface (approx. 1.5 mm) to allow for minor shrinkage during curing.
5. Sanding and Levelling
Once fully cured (typically 12 - 24 hours), sand the repaired area. Always use a rigid sanding block. The objective is to restore the exact original material thickness (e.g. exactly 16.0 mm). Sand down the bulk excess using 80-grit paper, then finish flat to the melamine coating with 120-grit. The surface must be completely flat, as any undulation will show through the new edging.
6. Applying New Edging
Cut the new edge banding with a slight allowance (approx. 22 mm width for a 16 mm board). For pre-glued iron-on edging: apply using an iron on medium heat. Immediately press down firmly along the edge using a wooden block. For ABS edging: use contact adhesive. Once cooled, trim the overhang flush at the sides using a cabinet scraper or a sharp chisel. Finally, ease the sharp edges with fine 240-grit sandpaper.
7. Refitting Hardware
If hinges or drawer runners were previously mounted at the repaired spot, the holes must be redrilled. The cured resin filler provides very high pull-out strength. Pre-drill the fixing locations accurately. For standard concealed hinges, drill the 35 mm cup hole using a Forstner bit. For mounting plates or drawer runners using the System 32 hole pattern, drill 5 mm holes for Euro screws.
If you are using conventional countersunk screws, opt for PZ2 wood screws. Their Pozidriv cross-recess profile provides optimal torque transfer when driving into hard resin.
