Retrofitting castors onto existing cabinetry or shelving systems is a standard task in furniture making and interior joinery. The reason lies in the material: such shelving units are mostly made of honeycomb board, whose thin outer skins do not provide sufficient tensile strength for point-loaded screw fixings.

- Optional: grab adhesive or wood glue for additional shear strength
Step-by-Step Guide: Fitting Furniture Castors
Proceed systematically during installation to ensure smooth rolling and safe load transfer.
1. Cut and Prepare the Base Plate
Have the base plate cut in a workshop or DIY merchant to match the exact outer profile of the shelving bottom. For a neater look, the board can be cut 2 mm to 3 mm smaller all round, creating a subtle shadow gap so it sits slightly recessed.
2. Position the Castors on the Base Plate
Lay the base plate flat on your workbench. Position the castors in the corners. The mounting plate should sit roughly 10 mm to 15 mm from the edge. Ensure the swivel radius of the castors does not extend beyond the outer edge of the plate, preventing the wheels from catching on skirting boards or walls. Mark the fixing holes of the mounting plates using a pencil.
3. Pilot Drill the Fixing Holes
To prevent the timber board from splitting, all marked points must be pre-drilled. Use a 3 mm wood drill bit. Do not drill completely through the board. A depth stop or a piece of tape on the drill bit (approx. 14 mm depth for an 18 mm plate) ensures accuracy.
4. Fasten Castors to the Base Plate
Place the castors over the pilot holes. Use panhead screws. Unlike countersunk screws, these sit flush against the metal plate of the castor and will not exert spreading pressure inside the metal holes, significantly strengthening the joint. Tighten the screws hand-tight using your cordless driver.
5. Secure the Base Plate to the Shelving Unit
Carefully turn the empty shelving unit upside down. Place the prepared base plate (with mounted castors facing upwards) on the bottom of the shelf and align it flush.
Important for honeycomb panels: The outer frame of the shelving unit consists internally of a solid internal rail (usually chipboard or MDF) measuring about 20 mm to 30 mm wide. Screws can only grip securely within this perimeter zone. Pre-drill the base plate around the edge (approx. 15 mm from the outer edge) using a 4 mm drill bit. Countersink the holes slightly. Apply beads of grab adhesive onto the contact surface and screw the base plate securely into the solid perimeter rail of the shelf using 4 x 35 mm countersunk screws.
6. Final Checks
Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. Turn the shelving unit upright with the help of a second person. Test the function of the brakes and check that the wheels roll smoothly.
Avoiding Common Installation Mistakes
- Incorrect screw head: Using countersunk screws on the flat mounting plate of a castor results in an unstable connection. The conical screw head does not seat flush with the flat stamping of the plate and loosens under vibration.
- Omitting the base plate on lightweight boards: Screwing castors directly into the HDF surface of wall shelving or honeycomb room dividers will cause the castors to rip out the moment the unit is shifted.
- Castor diameter too small: Wheel diameters under 50 mm jam easily on carpet edges or tile joints. Choose a wheel diameter of at least 50 mm, or ideally 75 mm, for heavier units.
- Ignoring dynamic loads: Pushing furniture over thresholds generates high leverage forces. Always calculate load capacity with a generous margin.
FAQ on Furniture Castors for Heavy Shelving
Can I use threaded stems instead of mounting plates? On solid timber furniture, threaded stem castors (e.g. M8) can be used together with a threaded insert (screw-in bush). On lightweight or honeycomb panels, this is technically impossible because the insert cannot grip inside the hollow core. Here, a flat mounting plate with a reinforcing base plate is the only professional solution.
How much height will the castors add to the shelving unit? The additional overall height consists of the base plate thickness (e.g. 18 mm) plus the total height of the castor unit (overall height, not just wheel diameter). A 50 mm wheel often has an overall castor height of around 70 mm. In this example, the unit will sit 88 mm higher. Keep this in mind during room planning.
Are there alternatives to castors if the shelf only needs lifting slightly off the floor? If full mobility is not needed, but protection against floor moisture or slight height adjustment is required, adjustable furniture legs or low glides are ideal alternatives. On lightweight hollow panels, these also require the support of a base plate structure.
Can castors be retrofitted to any piece of furniture? Generally yes, provided the furniture structure allows it. For very tall, narrow furniture such as a wardrobe for two people, castors raise the centre of gravity and increase the risk of tipping. Such tall units should be secured with flexible wall ties or fitted without castors entirely. For low, wide furniture such as a lowboard for TV or a desk with shelving, retrofitting castors is completely sound structurally.
