Step 1: Dismantling and Preparation

Remove the old drawer from the chest of drawers. Dismantle all existing wooden runners, wheels, or guide strips both inside the carcass and on the drawer box. If old screw holes sit directly on the new mounting line, plug them with wooden dowels (Ø 5 mm) and wood glue so the new screws have adequate grip in the base material.

Step 2: Dimensional Check and Tolerances

Measure the internal width of the carcass and the external width of the drawer box down to the millimetre. Example:

  • Internal carcass width: 400 mm
  • External drawer width: 374 mm
  • Difference: 26 mm (divided by 2 = 13 mm per side).

This falls within the tolerance for a 12.7 mm thick runner. If the drawer is too wide (e.g. only 20 mm total clearance), the external sides of the drawer must be planed down or routed by the missing dimension. If the drawer is too narrow, the gap can be compensated for using suitable washers or spacer shims between the carcass and the runner.

Step 3: Separating the Runners

Ball bearing telescopic runners consist of an outer carcass profile and an inner drawer profile. Extend the runner fully. On the back of the inner profile, there is a small plastic release lever. Push this up or down to pull the drawer profile completely out of the carcass profile.

Step 4: Mounting the Carcass Profile

Determine the mounting height inside the carcass. Using the try square, mark an exact horizontal line on the carcass interior. If the chest of drawers features a System 32 hole pattern, you can drive Euro screws directly into the 5 mm drill holes.

If no pre-drilled holes exist, position the carcass profile along the marked line so the front edge of the runner is recessed approximately 2 mm behind the front edge of the cabinet carcass. Initially, secure the runner using the vertical slotted holes with the first two chipboard screws. This allows for a later height adjustment of approx. 2 mm up or down.

Step 5: Mounting the Drawer Profile

Mark a horizontal line along the outside of the drawer box. The height of this line must correspond precisely to the position of the carcass profile, minus the bottom clearance intended for the drawer.

Position the drawer profile flush with the front edge of the drawer front (or flush with the drawer box front edge for inset fronts). Fasten the profile initially through its slotted holes. Make absolutely sure that the countersunk screw heads sit completely flush inside the metal profile. If they protrude, they will collide with the ball cage when sliding in.

Step 6: Marriage and Adjustment

Guide the drawer with its mounted inner profiles squarely and horizontally into the carcass profiles. Push the drawer backwards with gentle, even pressure. You will feel slight resistance as the ball cage engages, followed by an audible click when the release levers lock in place.

Now check the drawer alignment and reveal. Does the front sit flush with the carcass? Is the gap consistent all the way around? If not, pull the drawer out, slightly loosen the screws in the slotted holes, and adjust the position. Once everything fits perfectly, permanently lock the runners by inserting additional screws into the round fixing holes.

The Soft-Close Mechanism: Function and Testing

The soft-close mechanism engages over the last few centimetres of closure. A catch pin on the slide tensions a spring when opening. When closing, the drawer profile hooks into this catch. The spring pulls the drawer shut while an integrated fluid damper (often a small hydraulic piston) slows down the movement, ensuring a quiet close.

Important: Never confuse this system with a push-to-open mechanism. Whilst soft-close slows down and pulls the drawer shut, a push-to-open system ejects the drawer using spring tension. Both systems operate on opposing physical principles.

  • Protruding screw heads: If pan-head screws are used instead of countersunk screws, the ball cage rubs against the heads. The runner will operate roughly and suffer permanent damage over time.
  • Lack of parallelism: If the distance between the carcass profiles is 400 mm at the front and 398 mm at the back, the drawer will jam halfway. The profiles must be installed completely parallel and at a 90° angle to the front.
  • Soft-close fails to trigger: This occurs when the drawer profile is fitted too far back on the drawer box. The activating pin fails to reach the damping mechanism in the carcass profile. Move the drawer profile 2 to 3 mm forward.
