Box furniture and shelving systems with square compartments (such as the familiar Kallax system) rely structurally on a combination of cam lock fittings and a few wooden pins. If these furniture items are frequently subjected to heavy loads, used freestanding as room dividers, or assembled and disassembled multiple times, their structural integrity suffers. The connections loosen, the piece of furniture loses its angular rigidity, and it begins to wobble.

By intentionally inserting additional 8 mm wooden dowels, load transfer is mechanically optimised. The dowel absorbs shear forces, while the glue creates an inseparable, frictional connection between the components. This guide explains the correct procedure, accurate drilling dimensions, and specific requirements for working with engineered wood products.

Step-by-Step Guide: Retrofitting Wooden Dowels Precisely

The greatest challenge when dowelling is the flush alignment of the drill holes with one another. A deviation of just 1.5 mm inevitably leads to an offset between components.

Step 1: Disassembly and Analysis of Panel Thickness

Dismantle the wobbly shelf element. Check the material thickness of the components. Standard shelves have a thickness of 15 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, or 19 mm. The panel thickness dictates the length of the dowel used and the drilling depth.

  • For panels 18 mm and above: Use 8 x 40 mm wooden dowels.
  • For panels from 15 mm to 16 mm: Use 8 x 30 mm wooden dowels (to avoid drilling through the face).

Step 2: Positioning the Drill Points (Edge)

Mark the positions for the new dowels on the edge (narrow face) of the shelf to be fitted. Maintain a distance of at least 30 mm from existing fittings (such as the Minifix system) to prevent material breakout. With a depth of, for example, 390 mm, it is advisable to position two additional dowels evenly between the factory fixing points.

Use the square to mark the exact centre of the panel thickness (e.g. at exactly 8 mm on a 16 mm panel).

Step 3: Setting the Depth Stop and Drilling the Edge

Calculate the drilling depth. The rule of thumb is: slightly more than half the dowel length plus a 2 mm allowance for the glue. Example for an 8 x 30 mm dowel:

  • Drilling depth for the edge: 17 mm
  • Drilling depth for the face: 15 mm

Fit the depth stop onto the 8 mm wood drill bit. A depth stop acts as a mechanical barrier for the drill bit – it strictly prevents penetration beyond the set dimension and protects against punctured side panels. Place the centring point exactly on the marked cross and drill at a right angle (90°) into the edge.

Step 4: Transferring Drill Points with Dowel Centre Points

Insert the 8 mm dowel centre points (the small metal cylinders with the pointed tip) into the freshly drilled holes on the edge. Now align the shelf precisely in the position where it is to be mounted onto the side panel (face). Ensure flush alignment along the front edge.

Press the shelf firmly against the side panel. The prongs of the dowel centre points indent the surface finish of the side panel, leaving an exact, precise mark for the next drilling step.

Step 5: Drilling the Side Panel (Face)

Remove the dowel centre points from the edge. Readjust the depth stop on the drill bit for the panel face (to 15 mm in the example above). Always check the remaining thickness of the panel. If the side panel is 16 mm thick, drill a maximum depth of 14 mm; otherwise, the centring point will break through the decorative finish on the outside.

Drill perfectly vertically into the side panel at the marked points.

Step 6: Gluing and Assembly

Apply a small drop of wood glue into the drill holes on the edge. Gently tap the wooden dowels in using the rubber mallet. Then apply glue into the drill holes on the side panel.

Join the components together. Use the rubber mallet (and a scrap block if necessary, to prevent damaging the finish) to close the joint tightly. Re-tighten any existing cam lock fittings. Wipe away escaping glue immediately with a damp cloth. Allow the furniture item to rest until the glue has cured completely.

Alternative Stabilisation for Extreme Loads

If the shelving unit is used for tool storage or very heavy lever-arch files, purely wooden joints are sometimes insufficient. Deeper shelving units (e.g. 390 mm depth) are frequently converted into TV benches or desk extensions. Retrofitting dowels stabilises the carcass to carry the weight of receivers or monitors. To route cables neatly through the back panel or top board, a hole must be drilled (typically 60 mm or 80 mm).

Common Mistakes During Dowel Assembly

  • Drilling without a depth stop: The most frequent mistake. Tape on a drill bit often slips. The result is a drilled-through side panel.
  • Too much glue (hydraulic pressure): If the drill hole is completely filled with glue, the dowel cannot be driven in fully. Glue cannot be compressed – in the worst case, the chipboard will split. A single drop at the bottom of the hole and some glue along the dowel flutes is sufficient.
  • Incorrect drill bit: A standard metal drill bit (HSS) tears the sensitive melamine coating. Only wood drill bits produce cleanly scored edges around the hole.

Can I dowel lightweight panels with a honeycomb core? Yes, but with limitations. The outer walls of thick shelving units often consist of a 3 mm HDF board filled with a paper honeycomb structure. Dowels do not hold in the hollow section. When drilling, you must hit the solid internal framing rail. This frame, made from chipboard or MDF, typically runs with a width of 25 mm to 35 mm along all outer edges.

How do I remove glued wooden dowels? Once properly cured with D2 or D3 glue, dowels cannot be pulled out without causing damage. If a component must be dismantled, saw the dowel off flush. The remaining dowel material inside the wood must then be precisely drilled out using an 8 mm drill bit.

What tolerance does a dowel joint allow? Virtually none. Unlike screws, which can be driven in at a slight angle, a dowel connection will bind if there is an offset of more than 1 mm. For this reason, always use dowel centre points to transfer drill marks rather than relying solely on a rule.
