Roller Runners vs. Ball Bearing Runners — Differences, Load Capacity & Definition

A roller runner moves on plastic rollers along a basic steel profile and is typically suited as a partial extension for lightweight drawers. In contrast, a ball bearing runner utilises small steel ball bearings in a telescopic slide system, enabling significantly higher load capacities, full extension, and the integration of damping systems.

The mechanical principle of these two guide systems differs fundamentally in construction, kinematics, and load-bearing capacity. Selecting the correct fitting depends on the exact dimensions of the furniture piece, the weight of the drawer box, and the required additional mechanical functions.

Mechanical Construction Compared

In a drawer roller runner, a plastic roller (typically made of wear-resistant polyamide) runs along a powder-coated steel rail. The system consists of two entirely separable components: the cabinet profile and the drawer profile. When inserting the drawer, it is simply hooked into place and kept on track by its own weight. Whilst the roller runner rests like a simple wagon on a track, the profiles of the ball bearing runner interlock securely with a form-fit design.

The ball bearing runner consists of two to three telescoping rails sliding within one another. Between the steel profiles sit ball cages that hold tiny steel balls at precise intervals. This system is play-free and firmly connected. The drawer can only be removed by operating a small release lever on the extended runner.

Extension Type: Partial Extension vs. Full Extension

A crucial technical criterion is the extension travel in relation to the nominal length of the runner.

  • Partial extension: Due to their design, roller runners are almost always constructed as a partial extension. This means the drawer can only be pulled out to approximately 75% of the cabinet depth. The rear part of the drawer remains inside the carcass.
  • Full extension: Ball bearing runners are primarily manufactured as three-part telescopic rails. A full extension drawer runner can be pulled out to 100% of the runner length. The entire drawer box is therefore fully accessible right up to the back panel.

Load Capacity and Strength

Due to the point loading on the individual plastic rollers, the load capacity of a roller runner is physically limited. Common nominal ratings range from 15 kg to a maximum of 25 kg. Consequently, they are predominantly used in lightweight office furniture, keyboard trays, or basic chests of drawers.

Ball bearing runners distribute the forces evenly across dozens of steel balls along the entire slide. This allows for a much more robust construction. Heavy-duty drawer runners, featuring thicker steel profiles and larger ball bearings, achieve load capacities of 30 kg, 45 kg, or even over 100 kg in industrial applications.

Additional Mechanical Functions

The enclosed telescopic system of the ball bearing runner provides sufficient installation space in the rear section for spring and damper mechanisms. Two opposing mechanisms must be distinguished here:

  • Soft-Close (damping): Drawer runners with damping absorb the momentum of the drawer over the final centimetres via an oil-pressure damper and pull it silently into the closed end position using a spring.
  • Push-to-Open (Tip-On): This mechanism is designed for handleless drawer fronts. Pressing the front tensions and releases a spring that pushes the drawer open by a short distance. Push to open drawer runners are the mechanical opposite of damping and cannot be combined in the same runner system.

By design, roller runners do not feature these complex mechanisms. They merely feature a simple self-closing drawer runner action. In this design, a slight slope in the rear third of the cabinet profile uses gravity to let the drawer roll closed by itself over the final centimetres.

Dimensions, Lengths, and Installation

Both runner types are available in standardised nominal lengths ranging from 250 mm - 800 mm. For shallow bathroom furniture or bedside tables, drawer runners 250 mm are frequently installed. In kitchen construction or deep workshop cabinets, dimensions such as drawer runners 500 mm are commonly used.

The following technical specifications apply to installation:

  • Side clearance: When side-mounting a ball bearing runner, an exact clearance of 12.7 mm is required between the drawer side and the internal cabinet wall. Roller runners typically require a side clearance of 12.5 mm.
  • Hole spacings: The mounting holes follow the System 32 standard, a row of holes spaced at 32 mm intervals commonly used across the furniture hardware industry.
  • Fixings: Securing is usually carried out with Euro screws (Ø 6.3 mm) directly into the 5 mm hole line or with chipboard screws (countersunk or pan head, drive PZ or TX).
