Self-Closing vs. Soft-Close (Damping) — Technical Terms Explained
The self-closing mechanism pulls a drawer shut automatically over the final few centimetres using spring tension, whereas soft-close damping decelerates this closing motion using a hydraulic cylinder to prevent loud slamming. Both mechanisms are frequently combined in modern furniture fittings, yet technically they are entirely separate components.
What is the exact difference?
In furniture assembly, these terms are often used synonymously, which is technically incorrect. The distinction lies in the direction of movement and the applied force:
A self-closing mechanism engages from a specific point (usually 30 mm to 50 mm before the closed position) and utilises a tensioned spring to pull the runner or door into the cabinet carcass. Without damping, the front strikes the cabinet carcass audibly.
Damping (soft-close), on the other hand, is a resistance system. A small cylinder filled with oil or gas builds up pressure during closing and dissipates the kinetic energy of the drawer. The self-closing unit acts like a workhorse pulling the drawer to its final position, whilst the soft-close system acts as a shock absorber that gently cushions the impact.
An important technical note: soft-close is the physical opposite of push-to-open (tip-on). Whilst damping brakes momentum, a tip-on system requires a manual push impulse to release the ejection spring. Combining both systems within a single runner requires specialised and complex synchronisation units.
Types and variants in fittings
The separation of both functions is clearly visible in the construction of the fittings:
- Drawer runners: Basic drawer runners with self-closing simply ensure full closure without regulating momentum. If drawer fronts are to close silently, drawer runners with damping must be installed. These feature an integrated plastic module at the rear end of the runner that combines the spring and damper cylinder.
- Hinges: For cabinet doors, the hinge spring performs the self-closing function. To prevent the door from slamming, concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (soft close) are used. The damper cylinder is either integrated invisibly into the hinge cup or clipped onto the hinge arm.
- Handleless fronts: This is where push-to-open drawer runners are used. These intentionally omit the classic self-closing feature, as the ejection spring must be tensioned manually during closing.
Dimensions, standards and typical values
When selecting the appropriate fittings, precise installation dimensions and load capacities are essential:
- Lengths: Soft-close runners are typically available in lengths from 250 mm - 800 mm. Standard modular dimensions in cabinet making include drawer runners 400 mm for bathroom furniture or drawer runners 500 mm for standard kitchen base units.
- Extension type: A full-extension drawer runner can be pulled out 100% from the cabinet carcass. The damping unit in these systems usually requires a minimum installation clearance of 12.7 mm in the internal gap between the drawer side and the carcass wall.
- Load capacity: The strength of the damper must match the weight of the drawer. Heavy-duty drawer runners (from 45 kg load capacity) feature stronger hydraulic cylinders, as they must decelerate significantly greater mass than standard runners.
- Concealed cup hinges: The standard drill hole diameter for damped hinges is 35 mm. Depending on the model, the opening angle is typically 95° or 110°.
Application & selection
The choice of mechanism depends on the location of use and the weight of the moving parts. In workshops or for basic office pedestal drawers, an economical roller drawer runner is often sufficient, providing mechanical closure via the slope at the rear end of the track.
In kitchens, bedrooms, and living spaces, the combination of self-closing and soft-close is now the technical standard. Especially with wide drawers (from 600 mm width) or when storing heavy crockery, damping protects drawer fronts from damage and hardware from premature wear caused by shocks.
