This results in material wear, stiff movement, and ultimately premature failure of the fitting. Noise development on furniture doors generally stems from three physical causes, which can occur individually or in combination:

Especially with large and heavy fronts, such as those typically fitted to a 3-door wardrobe or a solid 2-door wardrobe, the load placed on the dry metal axles increases significantly.
  2. Mechanical strain: If the door is not adjusted correctly, the pivot axes of the individual hinges do not run in a precise vertical line. The concealed hinge must then work against lateral resistance during every opening cycle. This lever action generates a creak or squeak.
  3. Contamination: In workshops, kitchens, or hallways, fine dust, grease, or textile fibres settle in the joints. These particles bind to any remaining lubricant and act like fine sandpaper.

Grinding noises can also occur with sliding systems, such as on a wardrobe with sliding doors. Here, however, the cause does not lie with hinges, but with dirty running tracks or blocked ball-bearing guide rollers.

Required Tools and Materials

For diagnosing and repairing furniture fittings, the following tools and supplies are required:

  • Screwdriver (Pozi PZ size 2 for most European furniture fittings)
  • Dry lubricant (PTFE spray) or technical silicone spray
  • Lint-free cotton cloth or microfibre cloth

Step-by-Step: Restoring a Silent Hinge Action

The repair process is carried out in three phases: cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment. This procedure applies to all common concealed cup hinges with a cup diameter of 35 mm and a standard opening angle of 110°.

1. Diagnosis and Cleaning

Open the door fully and move it slowly to pinpoint the exact hinge causing the noise. It is frequently the top hinge, as it absorbs the highest tensile loads. Vacuum the area around the cruciform mounting plate on the cabinet carcase and the hinge cup in the door. Then, wipe the hinge arms with a dry cloth to remove surface grime.

2. Targeted Lubrication

Apply a very short burst of PTFE or silicone spray directly onto the pivot pins and the internal spring of the hinge. Immediately open and close the door several times so that capillary action distributes the lubricant throughout the entire joint gap. Promptly wipe away any excess lubricant that has dripped onto the wood or decorative finish to prevent staining the chipboard.

Note: Never use cooking oil or penetrating oils (such as WD-40). Cooking oil hardens and gums up after a few weeks, completely seizing the mechanism. Penetrating oils wash out the remaining factory grease from the joint and then evaporate, worsening the problem over time.

3. Adjustment to Relieve Tension

If the hinge continues to make noise after lubrication, mechanical strain is present. The door must be realigned. A standard concealed hinge offers three adjustment options:

  • Door reveal (lateral adjustment): The front screw on the hinge arm moves the door to the left or right. Turn this screw slightly on all hinges until the gap between doors is parallel.

Particularly on furniture with multiple front panels, such as sideboards with 2 doors or wide sideboards with 3 doors, precise gap dimensions are crucial to prevent the doors from rubbing against each other during closing.

When Must the Hinge Be Replaced?

Lubrication and adjustment have physical limits. Replacing the fitting is essential when:

  • The internal closing spring is broken or worn out and no longer holds the door closed on its own.
  • The pivot pins are so heavily worn that the door visibly sags when open (play in the joint).
  • The threads of the adjustment screws are stripped and can no longer be tightened securely.

When replacing, the correct hinge mounting type must be selected. A full overlay hinge is used when the door sits completely in front of the carcase side panel. A half overlay hinge is used when two doors share a single central divider panel. If the door sits flush inside the carcase side panels, inset concealed hinges are required.

Prevention: Reducing Mechanical Load

To minimise wear on furniture fittings, the impact force when closing the door should be reduced. Slamming the door creates shock loads on the joints and fixing screws.

Retrofitting damping systems is an effective solution. Door dampers absorb the kinetic energy of the closing door and pull it shut gently over the final centimetres. These soft-close dampers can either be clipped directly onto the hinge arm or installed as separate drilled cylinders in the carcase.

For handleless fronts, mechanical opening mechanisms are recommended. Push-to-open catches allow the door to pop open with a gentle press on the front. This eliminates the need to pull the door forcibly by its edges, protecting the hinges in the long run.

When planning custom installations, such as made-to-measure sliding wardrobe doors, high-grade ball-bearing running gear should also be selected. Regularly vacuuming the bottom guide track prevents the rollers from jamming and stops irritating noise before it starts.
