Soft-Close & Dampers: How Does the Mechanism Work in Furniture Fittings?

Soft-close, also referred to as damping, is a mechanical or hydraulic system in furniture fittings that controls and brakes the closing speed of doors, flaps, and drawers over the final centimetres of travel. An integrated cylinder absorbs kinetic energy and ensures silent, gentle closing without slamming shut.

What Exactly Is Soft-Close?

The damping mechanism is typically based on a small cylinder filled with air or a specialised fluid (frequently silicone oil). As soon as the furniture front reaches a specific closing angle or insertion point, an activator catches the cylinder. The piston pushes the medium through a fine valve. The damper cylinder functions like a shock absorber on a car, absorbing the kinetic energy of the closing door or drawer and converting it into a smooth, decelerated gliding movement.

Important for installation practice: Soft-close must not be confused with push-to-open. These are opposing mechanisms. Whilst damping slows the closing movement down, drawer runners push to open is an ejection mechanism for handleless fronts that opens the drawer upon pressing.

Types and Variations of Damping

Depending on the component, damping is designed and positioned differently:

  • Hinges: On modern hinges, such as concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (soft close), the damper cylinder sits invisibly inside the hinge cup or is integrated into the hinge arm. Older systems use clip-on dampers.
  • Drawer runners: Here, damping is usually combined with a tension spring. This system is found on drawer runners with damping and is technically known as drawer runners with self-closing mechanism. The spring actively pulls the drawer shut over the last centimetres, whilst the cylinder brakes the movement.
  • Extension types: Damping is independent of the extension type. It is available on both a partial extension (approx. 75 % extension length) and drawer runners full extension, which extend to 100 %. Heavy duty drawer runners for high load capacities in kilograms are also equipped with suitable cylinders.

Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values

When planning and fitting, the specific dimensions of the fittings must be strictly observed:

  • Concealed hinges: The standard drilling hole for the hinge cup has a diameter of 35 mm (mini hinges use 26 mm). Typical opening angles are 95°, 110°, or between 155° and 165° for wide-angle hinges.
  • Drawer runners: The nominal lengths of runners with damping are based on the cabinet depth and typically range from 250 mm - 800 mm in furniture manufacturing. Common standard sizes include drawer runners 400 mm or drawer runners 500 mm.
  • Flap fittings: Gas struts are used for upward-opening fronts. Here, the force is specified in Newtons (N) rather than kilograms. Selection depends strictly on the exact flap weight and flap height.

Usage & Selection

The correct function of the damping relies directly on the weight of the furniture front. If a cabinet door is too light, the momentum is insufficient to overcome the resistance of the damper cylinder – the door remains slightly ajar. If the front is too heavy, it will slam despite the damper. High-quality concealed hinges therefore allow the damping force to be deactivated or smoothly adjusted via a small switch on the hinge cup. For wide or heavy drawers, using synchronised runners is recommended to prevent jamming when closing.
