Soft-Close vs. Self-Closing: Definition of Damping Systems

Soft-close is a hydraulic or pneumatic damping system that closes furniture doors and drawers gently and silently. Self-closing, on the other hand, is a purely mechanical spring mechanism that actively pulls a drawer shut over the final few centimetres without slowing it down. Both systems are frequently combined in furniture hardware, yet they are technically fundamentally different.

What exactly are soft-close and self-closing systems?

In hardware technology, the terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe two different physical processes when closing a furniture component.

The soft-close system (also referred to as damping) relies on a small cylinder filled with oil or gas. When closing the door or drawer, a piston presses into the cylinder and compresses the medium. This resistance dissipates the kinetic energy. The system works essentially like a shock absorber on a car: it absorbs the momentum and prevents the front from slamming harshly against the cabinet carcass.

The self-closing mechanism works entirely mechanically using tension springs. As soon as the drawer reaches a specific point during closing, the mechanism engages. The tensioned spring contracts and pulls the drawer fully into the cabinet carcass. Without additional damping, the drawer front hits the frame unbraked at the end of the spring's travel.

Types and variants in furniture fittings

Combining both systems is now the standard in high-quality furniture design, as the self-closing action pulls the unit shut whilst the damper prevents the impact. These mechanisms are integrated into various fittings:

  • Drawer runners: Modern drawer runners with damping combine the spring pull with a hydraulic damper. On basic drawer runners with self-closing action without a damper, the drawer slams shut. Simple roller runner drawer slides often utilise a physical slope along the final millimetres of the track to create an automatic gravity-assisted closure, which represents a primitive form of self-closing.
  • Hinges: On concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (Soft Close), the damper cylinder is either integrated invisibly within the hinge cup or clipped onto the hinge arm. A self-closing feature is provided here by the closing spring of the hinge.

Dimensions, standards, and typical values

The technical specification of damping and closing systems depends on the weight and size of the furniture element.

  • Activation distance: The self-closing and damping systems typically engage across the final 30 mm - 50 mm of the closing travel.
  • Runner lengths: The mechanisms operate independently of the nominal length of the runners and can be found in short drawer runners 350 mm for bathroom units as well as deep drawer runners 600 mm for kitchen islands.
  • Load capacity: The damper must be matched to the load. Heavy-duty drawer runners designed for loads of 45 kg, for example, require significantly stronger hydraulic cylinders than standard runners, as the moving mass produces greater kinetic energy.

Usage and selection

Choosing the correct system depends on the application area. In kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms, combining self-closing and damping is essential to minimise noise and material wear. For workshop furniture or basic office pedestals, a purely mechanical self-closing system is often sufficient to ensure drawers do not remain unintentionally open.

Important during planning: A damping system must not be confused with opening mechanisms such as push-to-open drawer runners. Push-to-open (also known as tip-on) is an opposing mechanism that releases and pushes the drawer outward when pressure is applied to the front. Because the release mechanism needs to tension a spring, it cannot be combined with a damped self-closing system in standard hardware fittings.
