Squeaking Drawer — Causes & Solutions

A squeaking drawer is caused by friction on dry, dirty, or worn components of the drawer runner.

When a high-pitched, scraping sound occurs when opening or closing furniture, it is a clear symptom of mechanical stress. The cause almost always lies directly within the runner mechanism. Whether in the workshop, kitchen, or office: smooth running is essential for the function and durability of the furniture. This guide is aimed at fitters and ambitious DIYers who want to systematically diagnose and resolve the problem.

Diagnosis: Why Is the Drawer Squeaking?

The noise is the result of metal rubbing against metal, or dry-running plastic rollers. To solve the problem permanently, the exact cause must first be identified on the drawer runners.

1. Lack of Lubrication and Dirt

Dust, wood shavings, or kitchen grease settle on the runners over time. This dirt binds the factory lubrication. Dust and debris act like sand in the gears inside the fine ball cages of the runners. The balls or rollers block slightly and slide over the metal instead of rolling, producing the typical squeak.

2. Overload and Distortion

Every runner has a defined load capacity in kg. If a standard runner is permanently overloaded, the profile deforms. The carriage is pushed out of its ideal path, leading to severe friction along the flanks. In addition, the heavy weight can distort the furniture carcass, meaning the runners are no longer precisely parallel to one another.

3. Loose Fixings

Vibrations from daily use can cause chipboard screws to loosen. When the runner has play, the drawer tilts during movement. Side tolerances are exceeded, and the mechanism rubs against the carcass or the fixing screws.

4. Material Wear

With a drawer runners roller guide, the plastic rollers wear down after thousands of cycles. They become out of round or develop cracks. In a ball bearing runner, the plastic ball cage can break, causing the steel balls to fall out or jam.

Tools Required for the Repair

For proper repair of the mechanism, the following tools should be ready:

  • Screwdriver or cordless driver with the appropriate bit (usually PZ 2 or TX 20)
  • Dry lubricant (PTFE spray or silicone spray) – never use penetrating oil or cooking oil
  • Microfibre cloth and vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
  • Spirit level or set square to check parallelism

Step-by-Step Solution: The Repair

Fixing the issue requires systematic cleaning and readjustment of the components.

Step 1: Remove the Drawer

Pull the drawer out fully. With a roller guide, the drawer is lifted slightly at the end and lifted out over the catch. If it is a full extension drawer runners with a ball bearing runner, there is usually a small plastic lever on the sides. Press this up on one side and down on the other to release the catch and pull the drawer box forward and out.

Step 2: Cleaning the Mechanism

Thoroughly vacuum the runners on the carcass and on the drawer. Then wipe down the running surfaces with a slightly damp microfibre cloth to remove hardened grease and stuck dust. The runners must be completely dry before the next step.

Step 3: Visual Inspection and Checking Screws

Check the profiles for scoring or deformation. Check all fixing screws. If a screw is loose, tighten it hand-tight. If the screw hole in the chipboard is stripped, insert a thicker screw (e.g. Ø 4 mm instead of 3.5 mm) or use a wood glue and dowel trick to refill the hole. Ensure that the screw heads are fully countersunk flush into the metal profile. A protruding screw head is a common cause of scraping noises.

Step 4: Applying Lubricant

Sparingly spray a dry lubricant (PTFE or silicone) onto the running surfaces and into the ball cage. Dry lubricants have the advantage of not attracting new dust. Move the telescopic runners back and forth several times by hand to distribute the lubricating film evenly.

Step 5: Assembly and Adjustment

Insert the drawer back into the runners completely horizontally. Push it into the carcass with light, even pressure until it stops. With telescopic runners, the safety catch engages audibly. Check the action: the squeaking should now be completely gone.

When to Replace? Choosing the Right Replacement Part

If cleaning and lubrication bring no improvement, or if a grinding, scraping noise indicates destroyed bearings, replacing the fittings is unavoidable. Also, if a Soft-Close damper loses oil, the component must be replaced.

When replacing, you have the opportunity to upgrade the furniture's functionality. Pay attention to the existing drilling pattern. Most modern furniture uses the System 32, a continuous row of holes spaced 32 mm apart, which greatly simplifies replacement.

  • Determine the length: Measure the nominal length of the closed runner. Common dimensions for standard chests of drawers are drawer runners 400 mm or drawer runners 450 mm. Overall lengths in furniture construction typically range from 250 mm - 800 mm.
  • Select the extension type: A single extension can be pulled out of the carcass by around 75%. A full extension allows 100% access to the drawer contents, which is particularly ergonomic in kitchens and workshops.
  • Adjust the load capacity: For heavy pots or toolboxes, standard runners (usually up to 25 kg) are insufficient. Here, heavy duty drawer runners must be installed, which safely carry loads of 45 kg or more depending on the model.
  • Convenience features: Upgrading to drawer runners with soft close ensures gentle, silent closing (Soft-Close). Note: This mechanism gently pulls the drawer shut. It must not be confused with Push-to-Open, where the handleless front pops open when pressed.

Prevention: Keeping the Movement Permanently Quiet

For drawer systems to operate silently for years, proper usage is essential.

Weight distribution plays a central role. When heavy items slide around inside during opening and closing, it creates a dynamic imbalance that puts uneven load on the runners. A properly fitted non slip drawer mat prevents contents from sliding around and ensures a stable centre of gravity.

Also avoid asymmetrical operation. Wide drawers should always be opened centrally by the handle or, if two handles are fitted, pulled with both hands in parallel. Pulling from one side causes the runner to jam and vastly accelerates wear on the guide elements.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Drawer Repairs

Can I use WD-40 or regular machine oil against squeaking? No. Penetrating oils or wet lubricants resolve the issue in the short term, but bind dust and dirt from the air over time. This creates a sticky paste that blocks the ball bearings. Use only dry lubricants such as PTFE spray.

The runner is fine, but it is still rubbing. Why is this? Often it is not the runner itself rubbing, but the wooden drawer box against the carcass or the front panel of the drawer below. Check the gaps. On modern undermount runners, the height and tilt of the front can usually be adjusted in millimetre increments via small thumbwheels on the locking device (underneath the drawer base).

Can the plastic rollers of a roller guide be replaced individually? As a rule, no. The rollers are permanently riveted to the metal profile. If a roller is defective, the complete pair of runners must be replaced. Because these fittings are standardised, replacement is quick and straightforward.

Why is the self-closing mechanism no longer working properly after cleaning? The closing mechanism consists of a small spring and a plastic activator. If this activator was pushed backwards during careless insertion of the drawer, the drawer pin misses it completely. Carefully pull the activator on the runner forward again using a screwdriver until it audibly clicks into place. Then insert the drawer once more.
