Standard Wardrobe Dimensions & Internal Hardware Guide

Planning a built-in or freestanding wardrobe requires a balance between external room proportions and internal utility. Understanding standard wardrobe measurements ensures clothes hang freely without bunching, internal drawers open clear of hinges, and structural hardware is fitted correctly to bear heavy loads over time.

Standard Carcass Depths and Hanging Requirements

Carcass depth is the most critical dimension in wardrobe design because it directly impacts how garments fit on a rail. A standard adult coat hanger measures between 420 mm and 450 mm in width. To accommodate coats, suits, and shirts without catching the sleeves in the doors, the internal depth must provide sufficient clearance.

  • Full-depth wardrobes (hinged doors): Require an external depth of 600 mm, translating to roughly 560 mm to 580 mm of internal clearance depending on back panel construction.
  • Sliding door wardrobes: Typically require an overall depth of 650 mm to 680 mm, as sliding track mechanisms consume 70 mm to 100 mm of internal space.
  • Shallow wardrobes: Where space is tight, units with an internal depth of 350 mm to 400 mm can be built, but these require pull-out wardrobe rails that store garments front-to-back rather than side-to-side.

Vertical Heights for Hanging Rails

Hanging rails should be positioned to maximise storage while avoiding creased hems. Standard wardrobe measurements generally account for single or double hanging sections depending on the available ceiling height.

When installing oval wardrobe rails (typically 30 x 15 mm) or round tubes (25 mm diameter), allow at least 50 mm of clearance between the top of the rail and the underside of the shelf above. This ensures standard hanger hooks can be lifted on and off smoothly without scratching the cabinetry.

Internal Drawers and Runner Clearances

Adding internal drawers inside a wardrobe carcass introduces specific fitting challenges. Standard ball-bearing and concealed undermount runners are designed for precise gaps between the drawer box and carcass side panels. However, hinged doors can obstruct the path of internal drawers.

To ensure drawers pull out freely:

  • Hinge obstruction: Standard concealed hinges project into the internal space when the door is open at 90 or 110 degrees. Use 155-degree or 165-degree wide-angle hinges (zero-protrusion hinges) so the door swings fully clear of the opening.
  • Spacer blocks: If standard hinges are used, fit a 25 mm to 50 mm timber spacer on the hinge side of the carcass to set the drawer runners away from the door sweep.
  • Runner depth: In a 560 mm internal depth carcass, opt for 500 mm or 550 mm runners to leave sufficient tolerance behind the drawer for fixing screws and backboards.

Spans, Shelf Loads, and Structural Fixings

Wardrobes carry significant weight, particularly when rails are filled with heavy winter coats or shelves are loaded with folded knitwear. An unsupported rail spanning more than 900 mm will bow under load. Always fit a central rail support bracket on spans exceeding 1000 mm to distribute weight evenly across the carcass structure.

Similarly, internal shelving constructed from 18 mm MFC or MDF should not exceed an unsupported span of 800 mm to 900 mm. For wider openings, consider vertical dividers or heavy-duty shelf support studs fitted into standard 32 mm system drilling holes.
