In most cases, a sticking drawer is the result of a mechanical blockage, a warped cabinet carcass, or worn drawer runners where tolerance limits have been exceeded.

A smoothly operating drawer system relies on exact parallelism and precisely calculated clearances. If the guide rail deviates by even 1.5 mm from its axis, frictional resistance increases drastically. The result: the runner sticks, catches, or jams completely. Causes of a Sticking Drawer

Before reaching for tools, the exact source of the fault must be pinpointed. Drawer runner mechanisms are sensitive to external influences and material fatigue.

  • Loose screws: The most common cause. If chipboard screws (usually with a diameter of 3.5 mm or 4 mm) work loose on the runners, the screw head protrudes into the running track. The carriage or rollers collide with the metal during closing.
  • Warped carcass: Furniture made from chipboard or MDF can become out of square due to uneven floors or improper loading. If the cabinet is no longer aligned at an exact 90-degree angle, the installation gap for the runners narrows. The runners no longer run parallel, leading to immediate jamming.
  • Overloading: Every runner has a defined dynamic load capacity. If this is exceeded, the metal profile deforms. The ball bearings in a ball-bearing runner become crushed and can no longer roll freely.
  • Dirty running tracks: Dust, sawdust, or small items in the profiles block the ball cages. As with precision clockwork, even a tiny obstruction in the mechanism halts the entire system.
  • Defective dampers: On soft-close systems, the pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder at the end of the runner can leak or jam. The drawer can then only be closed over the final few centimetres with significant force.

For proper diagnosis and repair, the following tools should be on hand:

  • Screwdriver (PZ 2 or TX 15 / 20 drive)
  • Vernier calliper for checking gap dimensions
  • Spirit level and set square
  • Silicone-free lubricant (e.g. PTFE spray)
  • Lint-free cleaning cloth

Step-by-Step Solution

1. Remove the Drawer

To inspect the drawer runners, the drawer box must be removed from the carcass. The procedure varies depending on the system:

  • With a roller runner, the drawer is pulled out to the stop and then lifted slightly at the front to clear the rollers over each other.
  • With a side-mounted ball-bearing runner, there is usually a small plastic release lever inside the runner profile. This must be pushed upwards on one side and downwards on the other to pull the drawer forward and out.
  • Under-mount runner: Here, the locking devices are located beneath the drawer base. Actuating the release levers on the underside disengages the drawer from the runner.

2. Visual Inspection and Cleaning

Check the running tracks of the runners inside the cabinet and on the drawer box. Are the ball cages intact? Are any steel ball bearings missing? Wipe down the runners with a dry cloth. For heavy contamination, compressed air can help. Next, apply a paper-thin film of PTFE spray onto the running tracks. Do not use thick grease, as this attracts dirt.

3. Check Screws and Tolerances

Run your finger over all screw fixings on the drawer systems. Every screw head must sit flush within the countersunk hole of the metal. Tighten loose screws hand-tight using a PZ screwdriver. Do not overtighten, otherwise the thread will strip in the chipboard. Use a spirit level to verify that the runners are mounted exactly horizontal and at the same height.

4. Align the Carcass

Measure the diagonals of the cabinet back panel. If both dimensions are identical, the carcass is square. If the dimensions differ, the cabinet must be realigned. Readjusting the height-adjustable furniture legs is often sufficient.

When is Replacement Unavoidable?

Mechanical damage can rarely be repaired. If the metal profile of a runner is bent, the ball cage is broken, or individual steel bearings have fallen out, the component must be replaced. A replacement is also necessary if the plastic wheels of a roller runner have developed flat spots (out of round).

Determining the Correct Replacement Part

When replacing runners, exact dimensions are essential. The most important specification is the nominal length (installation length when closed). In furniture construction, this typically ranges between 250 mm - 800 mm. Measure the old runner using a vernier calliper or folding rule. Select the appropriate extension type: A partial extension runner pulls out of the carcass to approximately 75%. The rear part of the drawer remains concealed. Mechanisms: Soft-Close vs. Push to Open

When purchasing new fittings, pay attention to the desired opening mechanism. These two systems are mechanically incompatible and must not be confused:

  • Drawer runners with soft-close: An integrated cylinder dampens momentum during closing and pulls the drawer shut gently and silently over the last few centimetres.
  • Drawer runners push to open (Tip-On): An ejection mechanism triggered by light pressure on the handleless front. A spring pushes the drawer open.

Why does the drawer stick only over the last few centimetres? This is a typical symptom of a defective self-closing mechanism.
