System 32 in Cabinet Making — Definition, Hole Pitch & Grid Dimensions

System 32 is an international standard in cabinet making that defines the spacing of drilled holes in carcase components. The grid dimension measures exactly 32 mm between hole centres. It facilitates the standardised installation of fittings such as concealed hinges, shelf supports, and drawer runners in a continuous line of holes.

What exactly is System 32?

The System 32 standard was originally developed for industrial furniture manufacturing to standardise production processes. Today, it is the universal benchmark for joiners, fitters, and professional interior fit-outs. The grid acts as a universal coordinate system for the cabinet carcase.

By utilising a continuous line of holes in the side panels of a cabinet, it ensures that all fittings—regardless of manufacturer—can be fitted with pinpoint accuracy. This allows for flexible shelf positioning as well as the precise alignment of hinges and runners without having to measure anew for each individual component.

Dimensions and standards in the grid system

Construction according to this standard follows strict mathematical specifications that must be adhered to during planning and drilling:

  • Hole line pitch: The distance from the centre of one hole to the centre of the next hole is exactly 32 mm.
  • Drill hole diameter: The standard hole has a diameter of 5 mm. This dimension suits the classic Euro screw as well as standard shelf supports. Less frequently, a 3 mm diameter is used for wood screws (usually with a PZ or TX drive).
  • Front edge distance: The first vertical row of holes is positioned exactly 37 mm from the front edge of the cabinet side panel.
  • Rear edge distance: The rear row of holes is generally also drilled at a 37 mm distance from the back panel groove or the rear edge.
  • Concealed hinge distance: On cabinet doors, the centre of the 35 mm cup hole is typically 21.5 mm or 22 mm from the door edge, which, when combined with a cruciform mounting plate, aligns perfectly with the 37 mm grid on the side panel.

System 32 when installing drawer runners

The grid system demonstrates its full utility during the installation of moving cabinet hardware. The installation of modern drawer systems is entirely based on 32 mm increments. The cabinet profile rails of the runners feature stamped hole patterns calibrated to match the 5 mm drill holes in the side panel precisely.

Whether fitting a full extension or a single extension runner: a precisely planned drawer runner system can be screwed into place using the grid system without the need for time-consuming marking out. The runners are simply secured into the pre-drilled holes using Euro screws.

Particularly with complex drawer systems engineered to support heavy loads, fixing into pre-drilled 5 mm holes provides significantly higher pull-out resistance compared to driving chipboard screws directly into wood. Every standardised drawer system also uses the vertical 32 mm increments to calculate the exact height of the drawer fronts and the gap between individual drawers. For drawer systems in kitchens (such as those accommodating waste sorting systems), the grid dimension is likewise essential for mounting the mechanical components in alignment and free from jamming.

Drilling and tools for the fitter

To execute the grid accurately in joinery, fitters and carpenters require specialised tools. Drilling freehand inevitably introduces tolerances, which later cause fittings to bind or stick.

  • Drilling jig: A guide rail made of aluminium or plastic that establishes the 32 mm pitch and 37 mm edge setback.
  • Router: Using a dedicated hole-line adapter and a 5 mm straight router bit allows tear-free holes to be machined in chipboard or MDF.
  • Depth stop: Essential for preventing the drill from breaking through 16 mm or 19 mm thick panels. The typical drilling depth for a Euro screw is 12 mm to 14 mm.
