System 32 is an international construction standard in furniture making in which all drilled holes in cabinet side panels feature an exact vertical spacing of 32 mm from one another. This grid spacing allows for the standardised, cross-manufacturer installation of furniture fittings such as hinges, runners, and shelf supports.

What Exactly Is System 32?

System 32 was developed to standardise industrial furniture manufacturing and the fitting of hardware. It defines a continuous grid of holes in the side panels of a cabinet carcass. This grid acts like a fixed coordinate system for the installer, allocating each component its precise position without the need to remeasure and mark out for every single fitting.

Thanks to this standardisation, fittings from different manufacturers fit into the same carcass. Fastening is typically carried out using Euro screws, whose shaft diameter matches the pre-drilled holes precisely to ensure high pull-out resistance.

Dimensions and Standards in the 32 mm System

Construction according to this standard is subject to fixed dimensional specifications that must strictly be adhered to when planning and drilling the rows of holes:

  • Hole spacing: The vertical distance from hole centre to hole centre is exactly 32 mm.
  • Distance to front edge: The front row of holes is standardly located 37 mm from the front edge of the cabinet carcass (excluding the front).
  • Drill hole diameter: A diameter of 5 mm is drilled to accommodate shelf supports and Euro screws. Less frequently, 3 mm drill holes are used as pilot holes for conventional chipboard screws.
  • Distance to rear edge: This varies depending on the carcass depth and type of fitting, but in standardised carcasses it is also often based on a multiple of 32 mm plus a fixed edge margin.

Application and Selection in Furniture Construction

The grid dimension forms the foundation for virtually all moving and load-bearing elements in a modern cabinet.

Hinges and Concealed Cup Hinges

Cruciform mounting plates for concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges are designed so that their fixing holes match the 32 mm grid precisely. This applies across manufacturers and for any type of door application. Whether fitting inset cup hinges for inset fronts or twin / half-overlay cup hinges for dual doors on a single partition – the mounting plate is secured directly into the front row of holes (37 mm distance from the edge) with Euro screws. Vertical height adjustment of the door is carried out later via the elongated slots on the mounting plate.

Drawers and Runners

The cabinet profiles of modern drawer systems also utilise this hole pattern. The fixing points of the runners are punched so that they can be screwed seamlessly into the 32 mm row. This not only simplifies the assembly of traditional wooden drawers, but also the integration of more complex kitchen mechanisms, such as a pull-out waste sorting system where the carrier rails must be screwed deep inside the cabinet carcass.

Shelves

The 5 mm drill holes are used directly for the flexible positioning of adjustable shelves. Shelf supports made of metal or plastic are inserted here. For heavy loads in workshop or kitchen cabinets, solid shelf supports with anti-tilt features are used. For display cabinets, specialist glass shelf supports with rubberised contact surfaces are chosen to prevent the glass panels from sliding.
