System 32: Definition, Hole Spacing & Dimensions in Cabinet Making

System 32 is an international standard in cabinet making based on a 32 mm grid system. It defines the exact spacing of drilled holes in the cabinet side panel to allow standardised furniture fittings such as concealed hinges, shelf supports, and drawer runners to be fitted accurately, modularly, and without extra measuring.

What exactly is System 32?

System 32 functions as a universal coordinate system for the cabinet carcass. It was developed in the middle of the 20th century to standardise industrial furniture manufacturing. Thanks to this grid dimension, fittings from different manufacturers are compatible across brands. Joiners and fitters use the continuous line of holes to position components flexibly at the desired height.

For instance, when you install drawer systems or an extension system for a cabinet, the fixing points of the runners align precisely with these pre-drilled holes. The grid ensures that cabinet fronts close with uniform gaps and internal pull-outs run horizontally.

Dimensions, standards, and typical values

For the correct implementation of the system in the workshop or during installation, strict dimensional guidelines in millimetres apply:

  • Hole spacing (drilling pitch): The distance from hole centre to hole centre is exactly 32 mm.
  • Front system setback (distance to front edge): The first drilled hole is positioned by default 37 mm away from the front cabinet edge. This dimension is crucial for overlay fronts and the correct position of the cruciform mounting plate for hinges. For inset fronts, this dimension is shifted backwards by the door thickness (e.g. 19 mm).
  • Drill hole diameter: Drilling is typically carried out at 5 mm. This diameter is the standard for shelf supports as well as the Euro screw, used to fix runners or mounting plates securely. Less commonly, 3 mm pilot holes are used for wood screws.
  • Rear system setback: The distance of the rear row of holes to the back panel is not strictly standardised, but is often chosen so that the distance between the front and rear rows of holes equals a multiple of 32 mm.

Application and installation in the cabinet carcass

Continuous drilling in the 32 mm grid allows flexible interior layout of cabinet carcasses. In kitchen installation or wardrobe assembly, the grid serves to accommodate a wide variety of functional elements.

Modern drawer systems for the kitchen, such as a drawer box system for cutlery or a pull-out waste sorting system, are designed so that the screw positions of the carcass runners align precisely with the 32 grid. The installer only needs to place the runners at the desired height and fix them into the 5 mm holes using Euro screws. Complex marking out of drill points is eliminated.

The grid is also essential for mounting doors. A concealed cup hinge is attached to the carcass via its mounting plate. The screw holes of the plate are spaced 32 mm apart and sit at a 37 mm distance from the edge, allowing the hinge to integrate seamlessly into the row of holes.
